Seems I would enjoy a place like that, just like the cabin on the first page.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 07:58 am:

Good morning one and all,

Well, the Dr. and I are back (reluctantly) from our yearly trip to the GSA conference which this year was in Denver, and I must say what an adventure this turned out to be. As some of you know, I did carry a PDA so I could write brief messages from the road, but that got pretty old trying to write with a touch screen so I gave up rather quickly....

So, to the trip. Some of the highlights included the Capitan Volcanic Field in NE New Mexico, a climb to the top of Pike's Peak east of the Springs at 14,110 ft., 3 passes over 11,000 ft., a side trip to the Valles Caldera in NM, the National Mining Museum in Leadville CO, the Packers game at Invesco (what a way to end an OT, eh??), lots and LOTS of geology in the mountains, and of course, pelting your loved one with a snowball on Loveland Pass at 12,000 ft.!! ;-)

The conference was also great. It's always nice to keep up with your profession and all the new and "unique" research that's going on. I saw a really good talk on the geology and mineralogy of the Eagle Prospect which was interesting. There were also quite a few sessions dealing with the current issue of climate change as well.

All in all it was a very good trip. We have lots of pics that we'll post in our gallery once they are developed.

Many thanks to the editors for the new pages. I'm very glad the political comments were preserved. Very, very interesting and educational as well. All don't agree (that's good) but very heartening to see the lack of complacency among our pasty friends!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 08:46 am:

I had to LOL when I read the title of the new discussion page, Charlie!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 09:40 am:

Charlie was up very early.

Happy to see that the Capt and the Doc had a nice trip.

I am going up next weekend to find a place to live (yoohoo!) so all wish me luck since I am moving in 13 days.

By Charles In Esky (Charlesinesky) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 09:46 am:

Today we saw the Arthur Anderson out in the harbor waiting to
dock. It looked kind of low in the water so my wife and I think it
is probably filled with coal or limestone waiting to unload at the
coal/limestone docks. Whatever, the actual point of writing is to
ask if this is the oreboat out there in Lake Superior close to the
Edmund Fitzgerald on that stormy night so many years ago. I
have to say this is one tired-looking boat. It has a big gray
stripe on the bow which looks for all the world like duct tape. If
this was the boat out there in Lake Superior on that stormy
night, I guess appearances are deceiving because this would
have to be one sturdy boat to ride out that storm, eh?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 10:00 am:

Charles in Esky..yes the Arthur M. Anderson was the freighter that was sailing along with the Fitz that unfortunate night. Capt. Jesse Cooper was at the Anderson's helm.

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 10:52 am:

We have our first Winter Storm Warning here in the Copper Country. Starting this afternoon till tomorrow afternoon, possible 6-12 inches of heavy Lake Effect Snow. WoooHooo, here we go, guys!

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 10:56 am:

Charlie I must thank you for the neat pic on "What's Up" today. My dream since I was a kid, was to have a caboose in my yard. It think it all started with one of my favorite childhood books "The Boxcare Children" Didn't even know until recently that there were further books in that series. I always said if I ever inherited or won a gazillion dollars, I'd buy a caboose and an original piece of authentic Tiffinay art. Dreams are what keeps some of us going thru lie, hey?

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 11:02 am:

Opps! Before anyone nails me....spelling today is lousy I know...."boxcar" -- "I" think----"life"

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 11:38 am:

I read most of the books in the Boxcar Children series to my three sons when they were younger. It is a really fun series, with many books in it. And, it was one that both my boys and I could "get into". Somehow, Nancy Drew mysteries just don't work very well with at least some guys. :-)

Wow, Brooke, I had no idea that you were planning to move UP there anytime soon! I hope you find a place to live that you like, and a good job. Best wishes!

Y'all in the western UP have fun with your Winter Storm Warning, and possible Blizzard, at least in the Keweenaw. I'm sure my oldest son will love it, as he loves the snow up there, if it has to be cold.

By derek tuoriniemi (Derek) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 12:52 pm:

Bring on the snow!!!!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 01:33 pm:

Hey, a bit off the subject, but germane to the new pages: is anyone else watching The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard on Masterpiece Theater? It's about an 'ordinary' woman in Great Britain who stands for parliament simply to make a point. She gets elected! Her message is "take the government to the people and listen to them!" It is an amazing and extremely well done series.

Unfortunately, part 3 of 5 has already aired, but I recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it if it appears in reruns.

By Snowman (Snowman) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 01:37 pm:

Did someone call me?

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 02:04 pm:

Snowman, they said they wanted a cold one! lol

By Snowman (Snowman) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 02:12 pm:

I could never turn a cold shoulder to someone in need. :)

By Norma in Midland (Normainmidland) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 03:32 pm:

The deer hunters will be happy with the snow. This way they can stay inside by the fire or venture as far as the ••••••. Right Uncle Chuck..

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 04:57 pm:

We need the snow for trackin that big buck, and 4-wheelin, what did you say to get sensored, shame on you Norma from Middleland. P.S. the snow also helps Marty find his way out of the woods, lol.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 05:33 pm:

I was guessing that the bleeped out word was c-a-s-i-n-o, Uncle Chuck? Could that be right? LOL

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 05:43 pm:

She probably said the •••••• word!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 06:52 pm:

You'll never know how much time the word 'CASIN0' has cost our staff. Also "P0KER". It is because of spam engines which attack discussion forums, and the steps we've had to take to prevent them from wreaking havoc to this website with thousands of automated postings.

Next time you see a string of red dots ••••••, you'll know why.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Monday, November 5, 2007 - 08:10 pm:

I knew all along what the word was, just gotta let sis have it! Norma, of course we're goin to the joint in Baraga, it's part of the Deer Hunting Experience in the Keweenaw. If you Pasty Camers are U.P. the week of the 12th stop on in at Little Betsy, the coffee is always on, and the family is always invited!

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 - 07:19 am:

The hamster's back in the wheel! The power came back on about six.

Chatter on the scanner sounds like the UPPCO crews are working the north shore between Eagle River and Eagle Harbor, and Keweenaw's finest is working their way out to Eagle River, plowing and salting.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 - 07:28 am:

I loved the Boxcar Children as a child too. I know my son got all of the ones after the original, but I didn't read them. I should though. I was really big into Trixie Belden. Oh my gosh, I still love those books and have purchased them for my granddaughter. However, she can NOT read them until after I do. LOL I got her the Bobbsey Twins series of books for Christmas this year. They had really good books when we were kids.
