This is somewhat of a "mystery sign" today, since the blast of snow we received all around the U.P. this week has hidden key parts of the content. While out "on the job", Z-Man spotted this "tribute to our Heroes" on the Herman hill (in the L'Anse area), so when his shift at work was complete, he returned to the scene to capture it, snow cover and all. Neither Z-Man or I know what the sign actually says underneath that shroud of white, so unless someone out there in the viewing audience can fill us in, we'll have to wait until the snow melts off and Z-Man can snap another shot with all the wording exposed. No matter what else it says, though, the important part of the message is showing: "Salute America's Heroes". A timely reminder with Veteran's Day fast approaching.

P.S. Z-Man is one of those heroes, having served in the U.S. Marines, so a special thanks to him and Semper Fi!

To our troops past and present----THANK YOU, and may God bless you all.

Amen Dean!

Echoing Dean's and Paul's message. Please keep all of our vets in your prayers. They have fought so that you may continue to pray.

Camp (Fort) Polk Louisiana? Why in the UP?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, November 8, 2007 - 07:09 am:

God bless our troops, both those serving and those who have. That includes you Z-Man.

You guys can keep your snow.

By Chuck K (Chuckclarkston) on Thursday, November 8, 2007 - 07:12 am:

I see Fort Polk, Louisiana on that sign.

My nephew proudly served our country in the Marines last year in Iraq, his stories he tells about his tour that the newsmedia do not report are not for the light-hearted! Even the pets and animals are victims!

Xerox has put out a site where you can choose a card and message to be sent to a soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan. They print and send the cards; it's free and easy: www.letssaythanks.com

Maija--Thanks for that web site. I'll pass it along to family and
friends

This may be a good time to draw attention to the U.P.'s only MOH winner, Oscar G. Johnson, of Foster City, Dickinson County. The VA Medical Facility in Iron Mountain has been/will be (don't know exact status) renamed in his honor. Here's a link to his MOH citation:

November 10 is, in fact, the 232nd anniversary of the United States Marine Corps!

It would be nice to know what it says. I am not ready for snow!

Another autumn day in the U.P. ...

There was also A MOH from Calumet for Peace Time in 1921. His name is Albert Joesph Smith. http://www.homeofheroes.com/moh/citations_peace/smith_albert.html

That's interesting. Now if I can remember which website (maybe a newspaper) made the claim about Oscar Johnson being the only MOH recipient from the U.P., a correction can be made. Thx for the info.

Sign is on the corner of Herman Road and the Poor Farm Road.
It was placed by a person living in the neighborhood. The last sign there was "Herman International Airport"

Status on the renaming of the VA Med Ctr in Iron Mountain:
http://www.ironmountaindailynews.com/stories/articles.asp?articleID=8356

This paper has it right..."only man in the Upper Peninsula to receive the Medal of Honor during wartime."

You are right about the sign being on the corner of Herman Road and the Poor Farm Road!

Strange to find such a sign in such an "off the beaten track" location! It surely deserves a more prominent location!
