Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 07:10 am:

Boyne City is a delightful small downstate town at the east end of Lake Charlevoix. Last Saturday it was invaded by the Copper Kings from Calumet, who conquered the Boyne City Ramblers 34-7, earning the right to move on to the football District Final in Iron Mountain this Friday.

Prior to the match-up last weekend, Main Street Calumet director Tom Tikkanen issued a challenge to his counterpart Hugh Conklin, Executive Director for Boyne City Main Street. As you can see, Hugh is a converted Kings fan - no doubt with mixed emotions - enjoying his losing bet with a delicious Pasty Central pasty. If the results had been different you would be seeing Tom Tikkanen eating morel mushrooms while wearing a Rambler's sweatshirt.

Our compliments to the good sports at Boyne City, and our congratulations to the Copper Kings as they gear up for Friday's brawl in Iron Mountain. You can catch all the action over at Pasty.NET with streaming audio of High School and College games from the U.P.

...and in case you're hungry for a pasty...

I think I'll have one of those for lunch!
Mr. Deb

Good November 1st morning!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 07:46 am:

Mmmmmmmmmmm, pasties!!!! Good luck in Iron Mountain, Copper Kings!

By Iron Range Dave (Blackhawk) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 07:48 am:

and Homer says,"Mmmmmmmmmmm, pasty." Much better than crow! Good luck to all the UP sportsters.

What a guy!!!!

By Iron Range Dave (Blackhawk) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 07:51 am:

Deb you been reading minds again! By the way, where in Minnesota do you live? I grew up on the east end of the Iron Range, Hoyt Lakes to be exact. Always nice to see someone from the Land of 10,000 lakes even if you are a transplant?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 08:03 am:

I know, I laughed when your post came up right after mine, Dave.

I live in Annandale, which is about 25 miles SW of St. Cloud. Have visited the Iron Range though. I don't know how close Big Fork is to the Iron Range, but my aunt lived there for years. Are you in MN or MI?

By Mel, not in KS anymore! (Mehollop) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 08:12 am:

Dave - I'm a Ranger now too, but barely. Moved up in May, and am living on the western edge of the Range in Coleraine.

It's beautiful up here. :)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 08:24 am:

Cool picture, Charlie. How did Conklin like the Pasty (since that picture is before his first bite)? I ask because I know for some, pasties are an aquired taste, one that comes with time. But, maybe starting out with the best bypasses that?

Congratulations to Calumet. I hope they win again on Saturday. Our local team plays in the second round of playoffs on Friday night in Bay City. We wish them all of the best; we hope Midland High wins Friday night!

A little levity for a change of pace...

The English language is a funny one. Tell a woman that time stands still when you look into her eyes and she'll adore you, but try to tell her that her face would stop a clock!

By Theresa R. Brunk (Trb0013) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 09:13 am:

I aquired my taste for Pasties on the 'first bite' (wink wink nudge nudge) Unfortunatley I celebrated Halloween with 350 kids and chicken wings and beer last night. Can't believe how many children couldn't speak English. I couldn't coaks them into even trying to say 'Trick or Treat.' Rule is 'if'n you don't say it, you get a sting of Mardi gras beads instead of candy.'

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 09:17 am:

That is one big honkin pasty. I remember eating those when I was a kid vacationing in Shingleton in the UP. I will have to stop into the Hut and try one next time I'm cruisin 41.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 09:35 am:

My introduction to a pasty happened when Bob and I were in a long line to board the Isle Royal Queen and he went to get something to eat. When he came back I had to try it, oh it was so good! I asked him what is that? He replied, "It's a dinosour egg." Another lady in line thought Bob was serious, we wondered if she went around asking where dinosour eggs were being served.

I'm sure he's happy that the local food is pasties. I sadly can't say I remember my first pasty, like many others on this site it just was what was for dinner here and there when Mom felt like making them (probably didn't have any teeth yet)

To Iron Range Dave: I spent one summer in the late 50s working on the taconite plant, midnight shift, hard-as-nails shift boss. I understand the plant is now closed, is it? I also know where Monclova Twp is as I spent 22 years teaching at BGsu. Good to hear form you.

By Musicteacher (Musicteacher) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 11:59 am:

To Theresa Brunk: I'm coming to your house next year
if your giving out wings and beer for Halloween!!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 12:10 pm:

OMG, does that pasty ever look delish :) Would go great on the cool crisp fall day that we are having today.

Iron Range Dave, I know exactly where Monclova Ohio is...I used to visit a friend of mine, who lived on Elber, out that way.

By John Preisler (Jpreisler) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 12:20 pm:

He's eating it dry? Needs some Toivo & Eino's!

By Marcia H. (Livinindenver) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 01:57 pm:

Good Luck CHS:)

By Ironton (Ironton) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 02:32 pm:

Like Jpreisler said - "He's eating it dry? Needs some Toivo & Eino's!"

Then I remembered,,, he is the looser!(?)
Boyne City is across the lake from me.

By Little M (Littlem) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 02:42 pm:

i agree! he needs toivo and eino's or at least ketchup! my boyfriend eats his with gravy (i'd actually never seen a pasty eaten with gravy until earlier this year when we had some! he is from wisconsin though), whereas i always grew up eating mine plain or with ketchup, depending on my mood! my brother has them with ketchup and mustard :)

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 10:12 pm:

Does anyone know the starting time of the game tomorrow night between the Calumet Copper Kings and Iron Mountain?

By Sean Finnegan (Sean) on Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 11:16 pm:

I have had a very hard time finding Toivo and Eino's sauce. Where is it available, stores or on the 'net'? Thanks.

By Laure (O2bindaup) on Friday, November 2, 2007 - 02:50 pm:

Mel,Not In Kansas Anymore & Iron Range Dave, I'm a former "Ranger". Moved from Da U.P eh to "Da Range" in '78. Lived there until the mines "changed strageties" then ventured south to Duluth. I now live near Minneapolis. I'm from the same little town as "Deb" ! We could have a reunion !

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, November 2, 2007 - 03:02 pm:

Laure, all I can say is, I do feel bad for you living so close to "The Cities".
Mr. Deb

By Laure (O2bindaup) on Friday, November 2, 2007 - 06:05 pm:

Why Mr. Deb?? Apparently, right now this is where I'm supposed to be. Moving here has been good for my daughter and I. One day, I may even venture up your way to meet you guys in person ..... ;-)
