By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 07:54 am:

Good morning! I remember as a child, walking up in the woods behind our house and coming to the train trestles. They were so high (or so it seemed) and we'd dare each other to walk across them. That was so scary, but then you'd get about half way across and you'd hear the train coming. You'd turn around and go back as fast as you could. As if it made a difference which way you went when you were already half way across. LOL But that was so much fun. There were 3 sets of tracks up there between LL and Calumet. We were always up there. I didn't know that this bridge even existed, and we were just on 2 this past summer on our way to St. Ignace to meet with some people we met on this site.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 08:33 am:

Deb, this one has a parking lot on each side of it. There are always people there walking over it.

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 09:34 am:

A while back my son and I were exploring the terrain under this bridge. He found one of those plastic Army parachute guys in a bush at the bottom. It was great to imagine how much fun the other kid must have had watching it descend from the launch point up on the bridge deck. Since then, he Army guy has accumulated lots of jump time from the top of the stairs at home.

A few years ago my pal Harry Burgess and his daughter Betsy and I were doing a reenactment in St. Ignace and I told them about my favorite beach in the area. Off we went to the dunes west of St. Ignace on 2, upon seeing the Cut River Bridge Betsy wanted to get out and look at the bridge. She spotted some steps and demanded that we go down to see what that beautiful river looked like. After doing about ten thousand steps down that brat said it was time to go back up to the car. My heart was pounding and I was soaked with sweat, the flys were biting and still the little devil wanted to go back to the car. All the time she is skipping up the steps sometimes doing two at a time. By now Harry and I can barely breath and are holding on to each other helping one another up the stairs. Now my legs are feeling like they weigh ten times what they did prior to going down the steps with that repulsive little devil. All the time Rose, Harrys wife is on top of the steps calling us on our walkie talkies and encourging us to hurry since she is locked out of the car and she is bored sitting on the top. Now we are looking up and only have a short distance to go and that mean nasty brat heads down the stairs again, chiding us for being so out of shape. Three more steps and we reached the apex of our adventure, upon reaching the top we both collapsed on the ground and heard Rose say did you have fun on the steps. We limped to the car and continued our trek to the dunes and the reving water of Lake Michigan. After several hours on the beach and in the water, satan wanted to go on the steps again as we passed over the bridge. Had we had my van we would have had some duct tape and I would have put it on the evil ones mouth. Harry sped up and ignored her pleas. The whole time Rose is laughing at us. So this is how I spent my summer two years ago.

Mikie, I'll bet the next time you take a trip with your friend, you take it without his wife and daughter.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 11:49 am:

Betsy is now sixteen and can drive herself, I will tell you about the first she gave me a ride to the doctor. I went in with problems caused by the accident and with the added problem of being scared almost to death from the ride. She is like a granddaughter to me since I am the closest person she has to a grandfather. We really are good friends and she is protective of me when we are on solid ground however in the car is another story. She calls me a wuss and she didn't think I could reach such high notes when I was screaming. All this time while holding my sides and being in pain. She is just a wonderful person who I adore, but will never ride with again. She and I had a ride along with my son a police officer and he showed us several different turns including the one where you are headed east and all of a sudden you are headed west, she took it all in. During our ride to the doctor she proceeded to show me what a great driver she is by doing what my son had taught her. Maybe I am just getting to old.

Great stories Mikie!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 12:12 pm:

Good stories, Mikie! We've all been there! I remember my girls hopping up the steps at one of the waterfalls around Munising, I think, while I was struggling on two feet. Also remember my hubby carrying our daughter on his shoulders up the steps of that tower just west of the Bridge. The Cut River Bridge is one of four in Michigan that have the same type of structure as the one in the Minneapolis disaster. So I tell my husband I'll just drive across it real fast. Used to go down those steps with my parents when we were camped at Brevort when I was little. Lots of memories with this picture!

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 02:05 pm:

If I knew how to post a picture then I would post the one of Deb and Mr. Deb on the beach this summer. The waves were wonderful that day and the water was fairly warm. Cant wait to head up there next summer.

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 02:06 pm:

Glad you survived the ride Mikie!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 02:08 pm:

Pennie, that wouldn't be very nice to put up a picture of Deb and her pet elephant seal.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 02:58 pm:

I wonder what the spot is on Sharon's cam at 2:39, I think.

This is the bridge they say is held up by air! What a goofy joke it is, but some people are gullible...
