The Pontello Cottage in Eagle River as it looked on this morning 8 years ago. I first met the photographer of this shot on this day 32 years ago (about 10 minutes after he was born). Happy Birthday, Jonathan :o)

The recent hot spell/atmospheric pressure condition down here in motown area caused many deliveries, including my grandson, Thatcher James Roehl! My daughter said they transferred nurses from all over the hospital and called some in on their day off since there were so many deliveries!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 - 12:33 pm:

Got back last night. It was a glorious 5-day weekend, even though the in-between days left something to be desired, mainly dry weather! Got to Aura late Thursday afternoon, and it was in the 80's. Friday the rain came down harder than I've ever seen it there. We couldn't even get out of our driveway, because it had turned to mud the more we tried to get out. Finally made it out for a jaunt to Houghton. Pulled back in the driveway that night, and reenacted the whole rainy scene Saturday. Had to drive across the neighbors' lawn to get out! Went to Houghton again. The plan was to go to Copper Harbor, because the rain finally stopped. Had to turn around halfway up the peninsula because of pea soup fog! That was a good excuse to eat at The Hut! We were pleasantly surprised by the extensive menu. Our meals were delicious. Pulled back in the driveway (we just don't learn). Eventually made it out. Sunday ended up a beautiful day, and we made it to the Harbor Haus. BUT . . . when we got back to Baraga, the torrential downpours started again! Finally had the good sense to park in the neighbors' driveway. All said, the colors were glorious, and we experienced them in all stages of "peakness". Left for home Monday morning (in fog again, with 80 degree temps). Stopped by Silver River Falls north of L'anse and they were running strong, as expected! That's always a beautiful stop in the fall. The smell of cedar was heavenly. Back to work!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 - 02:13 pm:

Forgot to mention: I DIDN'T SEE ANY MOOSE! But the exciting news was that I had two pileated woodpeckers on a birch tree about five feet from my living room window. I tried to stealthily move to the kitchen table to get my video camera and my still camera. They were posed perfectly: one on either side of the tree at my eye level. You can guess the rest. They saw me and flew. I bet you can also guess that I had both cameras on my lap the rest of the mornings when I was there sitting on the couch.

By Carmen Makela (Mrsmaxx) on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 - 05:35 pm:

I am just wondering if anyone knows a good website to look at to help me identify the birds at my birdfeeder.

By Gary Schrebe (Shrub31) on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 - 06:00 pm:

I've only seen one pileated woodpecker in my entire life which was about 15 years ago when a group of us were camping on the Mulligan Plains just south of The Silver Lake Basin. Like you Marsha I did not have my camera. I was taking a day hike by myself and was moving through some pretty thick brush when I all of a sudden I came upon one looking me about 30 yards away. It was really a thrill. I never knew about them and didn't know that they got that big.

By Snowman (Snowman) on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 - 06:22 pm:

Carmen, try; whatbird.com. Happy bird-day. :o)

By Carmen Makela (Mrsmaxx) on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 - 08:24 pm:

thanks snowman! What a wonderful website. That is going to help alot in identifying the different birds.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 - 10:13 pm:

Maija--Congrats on your grandson. Thatcher has a nice ring to it.
Happy Birthday, Jonathan and many more. Marsha--we were on
the road too yesterday. Did you notice any Ontario plates on your
way out of the UP? My daughter told me that traffic was stopped
near Teal Lake (Negaunee) last week as a moose and her calf
meandered across US41-- but like you, Marsha, we didn't see any
moose.
