A few years ago Olivia Bartlett caught up with Davey Holmbo for a profile in the Daily Mining Gazette. You may recall awhile back Davey appeared on the Pasty Cam in quite a different costume - mainly his bare skin - plunging into the ice encrusted waters of Portage Canal.
Among Davey's more sane pursuits, is the time he spends at Calumet Theatre, making sure the sound, lights, curtains, props, people, and action all result in an enjoyable experience for the audience.
Edie and I were in the audience yesterday afternoon for the 15th anniversary celebration of Keweenaw National Historical Park. Quite a milestone for the Copper Country! In the second photo above, Park Superintendent Jim Corless passes out badges to the new Junior Rangers, inducted with the help of Senator Carl Levin (to Jim's right). Isn't it interesting over the years how Senator Levin looks more and more like Benjamin Franklin?
Come to think of it, the Senator and Mr. Franklin have a number of things in common, besides the trademark glasses. Ben had a role in acquiring Isle Royale - the region's first National Park - and Carl was instrumental in securing the designation for KNHP fifteen years ago. (Has it really been that long?)
Pasty Central and Pasty.NET are proud supporters of Keweenaw National Historical Park, as well as Calumet Theatre, and we encourage you to take the tour and take in a show or two whenever you're in the Copper Country.
My favorite quote attributed to BEN, 'Beer is God's proof that He loves Us and wants us to be Happy'
I will have mine with a brat and a nice sauna, please!

I love the Calumet Theatre. I saw "Gone with the Wind" for the first time there. Great movie which I've seen many times since.
Also, my cousin Julie used to have a C & W band and I saw them perform there. It was actually pretty good. She lives in Nashville now, or somewhere in the surrounding area.

Levin looks more like Mr. Wipple the (Charmin) salesman.
Theresa--I will be sure to spread your Franklin quote very soon.
Deb-- I also saw "Gone with the Wind" at the Calumet Theatre ..lo may years ago.
Speaking of the Calumet Theatre, did anyone get to the Arlo Guthrie concert earlier this month? Did he sing about the Italian Hall? I heard him singing last night in Toronto. He did not sing about the Italian Hall here because outside of myself and my friends, nobody would have known about that sad event.

Both Benjamin Franklin and Carl Levin are heroes in my mind. Both bucked the odds and represent the hope for rationality and honesty in government.

By popular demand we will be starting a thread of more controversial on-going discussions (on another page), including topics like politics, religion, ketchup vs. gravy, etc. In the meantime - on the daily picture page - let's agree to avoid political rants. We also understand that one person's hero is another person's scoundrel. Several posts here today were lost in trying to move them to the new dedicated pages, mostly diatribes against icons on both sides of the isle.
By the way, the popular demand has come mostly from folks who want to be spared from a debate on these pages, but recognize that some visitors are inclined to a more heated discussion.

Charlie, would that new thread be called "War and Peace?"
By k j (Kathiscc) on Sunday, October 28, 2007 - 08:24 pm:
So where is the new page? Can't find it anywhere.
By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, October 28, 2007 - 08:39 pm:
I looked too, Kathi. Can't find it.

Hey-I've been working all day. First chance I had to get here. How do I get to the political rant?

" where is the new page?" "How do I get to the political rant?"
Remember, Charlie said " we will be starting a thread of more controversial on-going discussions ".
I'm sure that we'll hear more when it's ready to go!

Kosk--I was at Arlos's concert, and yes, he did sing that song. He also did "Alice's Restaurant" and "This Land Is Your Land". All the songs that you would expect him to sing. He is, by far, one of the best musicians around today. We sold out all the tickets for that show.He did the entire program on the stage completely alone. Wow, what a musician!!
By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 - 05:31 pm:
Musicteacher--
He did his whole show completely alone here too. I liked his piano rendition of "Freight Train to New Orleans" especially. Thanks for filling me in. I'm so glad that he sold out.
