Kevin Henriksen was recently on one of his numerous pilgrimages to the place that many of us call home, the U.P. His visit was during one of the windy times we've been experiencing much of lately, which produced such spectacular scenes as these. Lake Superior had herself whipped into quite a frenzy, with crashing, splashing, rolling and colliding waves. The second photo was snapped in the Pictured Rocks area, near Munising, where I think the other three were also, but actually could have been taken anywhere along the shores of this beautiful and powerful body of water.

Charlie's up to his tricks again with a new-and-improved video of Eagle River Falls, in case you missed it on the Pasty Cam page. The sound of splashing fits right in with today's still shots.

Good morning.

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 08:50 am:

Beautiful pictures. I love the Lake when she is a litle feisty.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 08:52 am:

Those are awesome pictures of waves, splash, and surf! I love pictures of Mother Superior all churned up on gorgeous days! Thank you, Kevin and Mary!

Beautiful pictures. I love the Lake when she is a little feisty. (oops...had to correct typing error)

The second shot looks like it was taken at Chapel Beach. Hubby and I were there last Saturday and the waves were awesome.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 09:10 am:

Aah, to be there!

By Alex B. Milne (Alex) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 09:31 am:

Fantastic photos! I especially like the third shot. I can almost here it crashing upon the shore, roaring out with it's last breath in defiance against it's Maker who proclaimed: "This far you shall go and you shall go no further".

By dotti caldwell (Dotti) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 09:39 am:

Beautiful! Doesn't Mother Nature remind us of who is really in charge?! Hope to see for myself one day. I heard a piece on NPR morning edition today about the low lake levels - Superior being the lowest of the Great Lakes. Sad!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 09:45 am:

Those are great, I also like the lake when it is rolling.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 09:48 am:

These are fantastic pictures! I saw Lake Superior like this on one of many of hubby and I snowmobile vacations...blue ice on the rocks and shoreline, just awesome!

By Jeffrey P. Carlson (Dlineman) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 10:09 am:

Great Pictures! It makes me homesick for the UP. I'd love to spend the whole day driving from Hancock to Copper Harbor.

By Frederic W. Koski (Fred) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 10:25 am:

Awesome photo's!

By John Preisler (Jpreisler) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 10:34 am:

She's-a frisky today!

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 11:28 am:

Great shots of the big lake. It also reminds me of the trip back from Isle Royale one summer. 10 foot waves and the Queen tossed around like a cork. And my stomach did not stay put----------yep, you guessed it----it was barf time. We would look out the window of the cabin and see a wall of water!! Learned a new respect for that lake------and the ship's captain.

By Smfwlk (Trollperson) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 12:39 pm:

Fantastic pics!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 12:39 pm:

Kevin Henriksen captured three Superior pictures that just took my breath away earlier this morning when I first focused my made in the U.P. eyes upon them. Now that I am back to normal and prepared to see them again, I can write to say this. Who is the Man on the right side in photo's one, and three? I can not say for sure, but could it be Old Man Winter cooling off getting ready to do his thing? Or Father Time who has been around forever? You all do see the silhouette, do you not?

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 12:48 pm:

I love the pictures (loved the falls too) and have made them into a slide show on my computer.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 02:58 pm:

Very observant, David H.!

By Kristin von Grew (Von) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 03:03 pm:

These pictures brought tears to my eyes, both in rememberance of trying to keep them open in the face of a Superior wind, and because I am 1200 miles away from the UP. Thanks for taking and posting these beauties!!!

K

ps - my vote for the silouette in pictures 1 and 3 is Old Man Winter watching the seasons change on Mother Earth's Superior face.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 03:20 pm:

or if you look a little higher on the rock profile you will see that it is mother nature herself.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 03:24 pm:

Any of these fabulous pics would be great for the next calendar. My favorite is the first with father winter (Heikki Lunta?) or mother nature and the green jello wave.

How beautiful, what strength and power GREAT pictures.

On the first page I didn't understand the remark about E.R. falls not being family friendly....can you explain....????

God Bless each of you...

By Walter P McNew (Waltermcnew) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 03:40 pm:

after the first i will be there fantastic pictures. i remain walter

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 04:17 pm:

Helen,
You Tube is not family friendly in some cases.
They were not referring to the Eagle River Falls themselves...just the web site the original movie was posted on. That is why Charlie took his own movie and posted here. Hope this helps.

What beautiful pictures. They went on my screensaver slide show.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 07:23 pm:

Oh my gosh, this is the best bunch of pictures in one day EVER. Thank you Kevin. I wish I knew how to make a slide show. Maybe I'll learn how to do all this stuff some day. OH yeah, I saved them all!

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 07:46 pm:

There is no better place on earth than pictured rocks. period.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 07:54 pm:

Go to "My pictures" in 'my documents.' At the top left hand corner it says view as a slide show.

More great lake photos from Kevin. A few years ago we came back from Isle Royale on the Queen when the lake was like this. We saw this person eating a massive quantity of Twizzlers candy licorice before we departed Rock Harbor. We told him he was making a big mistake knowing how the seas were (and having been to Isle Royale about 7 times at that point). Well, it goes without saying that he was a basket case about 20 minutes after we got out on the big lake. A memorable "I told you so moment."

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 10:43 pm:

Speaking of mushrooms (yesterday) I found about a dozen of those big white "puffballs" like they showed on TV6 the other day. The men they interviewed said they were going to fry them. Who wants these? Some are the size of baseballs and grapefruit. Some are bigger than my cap! I took some pix of them. This is the first time I have seen these things in my woods.

By Cherrie Shaw (Cherrieaz) on Thursday, October 18, 2007 - 06:22 pm:

The 2nd picture is so beautiful. I was born and raised in AZ and have never visited your area. But(God willing) maybe some day I will. So pretty.

I love Lake Superior, especially when it's so worked up! That third photo is fantastic! That lake will call me until my last day on this earth. I envy those of you who live so close! I'm lucky to get up there once a year.

Meant the fourth photo, but they're all great!

By heidi niederer (Hniederer) on Monday, January 7, 2008 - 11:35 pm:

As I watched the web cam video of the falls in Eagle River it brought a tear to my eye as I remembered playing in those falls as a little girl and walking down that part of the river to the lake, or swinging from a tree rope that dropped you into the river before the falls. I can also recall laying in bed at night listening to them before my sisters and i went to sleep. It's nice to see that someone other than our family enjoys them as much as we have over the years.
