At the time, these must have been the northern-most traffic signals in Michigan. Work on the snowmobile crossing on US-41, just down from the snow thermometer, eight years ago today on the Pasty Cam.

Good Morning

By Charles In Esky (Charlesinesky) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 11:19 am:

I just heard a good story. A family of pileated woodpeckers has
just moved into a tree near my sister-in-law's house in the
greater Watson area (that's in southern Marquette County). It
seemed like an excellent spot, I suppose, since my sister-in-law
and her husband have a log cabin. The sister-in-law says that,
clearly, the woodpeckers see her house as an excellent food
source. She says the pounding is driving them nuts -- plus
those birds are eating her house! Is that an authentic U.P. story
or what? --- Gee, I wonder if those birds could be trapped,
moved to Lansing, and put to work pounding some sense into
those blockheaded legislators down there?

WTG ON THE EARLY BIRD CONNIE!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 12:11 pm:

Do you mean the same legislators who are bringing in non-native species to get rid of the other invasive non-native species?

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 07:41 pm:

I don't think i wanna get my feet wet on that topic Charles and Brooke. So i'll start a new one.

What time (eastern) should the Nite Owl be put to sleep? Along with our legislators. And then it wood be time for the Woodpeckers and other species to get the U.P.'s Early Bird Award, even if you are non native. Now how was that for being off topic?

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 08:27 pm:

How does one distinguish the Nite Owl or the Early Bird? Nite Owl should go to sleep already.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 09:56 pm:

The Nite Qwl should end it's Hoot hootin who's around 3:00 a.m.U.P.time.And at 3:01 a.m. the Early Bird could start chirpin and hunt for it's pray.

Do you know the orange and white barrels that are in the picture today cost $75.00 each?

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 10:01 pm:

I don't get the concern for the early bird, shouldn't we just enjoy the day to day banter, and flip the bird?

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 11:02 pm:

Hei, Charles in Esky, those darn woodpeckers are sure making noise on my siding here in Cornell.
Only these are Downy and Hairy woodpeckers. Between squirrels, woodpeckers, and turkeys, it's enough to make you crazy! Some one had shot a nice 8 pt. buck around here the other day (or night) and it died in my hayfield. Didn't smell very good, so I dragged it with the pickup to the line fence. That's what ravens and eagles are for.

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 11:57 pm:

Our house was also attacked by woodpeckers. Told that to a stranger on a train returning from CA. He said that was not a problem. Simply buy several rubber snakes from the dime store an nail them thru the head loosely so any wing would make them move . The birds don't know they're fake. It has worked on my house for years.

I forgot our anniversary yesterday and if not for one of my daughters I wouldn't have known it was the 24th. Good thing about it Precious forgot also. Anniversary dinner was at Wendy's. One of my buddies remembered it and I didn't.

Happy Anniversary Mikie & Precious!!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 08:08 am:

Oh, Mikie! You guys have had a really traumatic year, so it's not that surprising that some things temporarily fell through the cracks. Happy Belated Anniversary, Mikie & Precious! Maybe you can do something to celebrate your anniversary this weekend? What number is it?

And, how are you two doing? I have not heard an update in a long time! I hope you are both doing well. Does Precious still have to wear her collar, etc?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 08:24 am:

It is forty one years since I made the former Judy Wisniewski my Precious bride. I have to drive her to work, pick her up, then take her to therapy. She is rid of the collar. My son gave me my old van back to drive till I buy a new car. I forgot about how much I liked driving it. The Manistee kids were here again for the weekend and I am still picking up cereal bowls from all over the house. They are good kids but don't pick up as well as I wish they would. They make up for it by being very loving to us. Hugs and kissed all the time by them. They wish we could live by them so we could see them all the time, only problem there is they would get tired of us and we would miss the other kids.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 08:37 am:

Happy Belated 41st Anniversary, Mikie and Precious! That is awesome! You have a little more than 6 years on my hubby & I.

I bet Precious is delighted to be out of her restraint! How long until she can drive again, or is this more so you can have the car during the day, Mikie?

Enjoy all of your grandkids, especially while they are little, and like to give hugs & kisses! That won't last forever, unfortunately.

You all take care! How are you doing, Mikie? Have all of your broken ribs healed yet?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 09:14 am:

I am afraid that it will be some time till she can drive again since she still can't turn her neck all the way and she likes being driven to work. During the winter I would drive her to work on the bad days. And always cleaned off her car, since my workshop is in the garage and she has to park outside. Marianne my ribs still hurt and seem to hurt more now then before.
