Toivo Lohela was the man tossing the horseshoe eight years ago today on the Pasty Cam. Toivo was one of our original pasty makers back in 1996. He passed away in 2001. In fact, all of our original pasty makers who were at Still Waters have passed away. It was a blessing to have known each one.

just got back from da UP. The weather was PERFECT !!!!
There are areas up there where the leaves are already changed , especially on US 141 between Amasa and Covington...its awesome already.

We went to the Houghton side breakwater yesterday. Pretty decent wave action.

Does anyone know why there are big areas of the breakwater fenced off ?

Good morning! Hope everybody has a safe and happy Labor Day before it's back to work tomorrow.

David, I haven't even been to the Houghton end of the breakwaters in a few years so I haven't a clue why there are fenced off portions. I know there's a fenced off portion at Bete Grise too. Don't know what that's about either.

Could this possibly have to do with Homeland Security similar to the Plexi-glass surrounding the viewing platform at the Soo Locks??? Hard to believe but just may be possible.

Good Morning to all! Have a safe and happy Labor Day.

morning to all. I just got back from the UP and it was great. Of course, the time went to quickly and I wish I had more time to spend there. I was able to see a beautiful sunset at Bucky's and hunt for a few rocks.

Sunsets, rocks and I would add starry skies. It doesn't get much
better than that! Happy Labor Day to all of us who have it off in the
US and Canada.

The fence is around the Breakwater area because it is now private property. The stamp sand in that area was covered with soil to promote growth of grass and trees. It will also stabilize the ground. You will see the same thing around Hubbell and Lake Linden. The gov't paid for this with super fund moneys.

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Monday, September 3, 2007 - 11:57 am:

Thanks for the info, I am aware of the sands being covered in Hubbell and Lake Linden..

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Monday, September 3, 2007 - 12:11 pm:

thanks for the information on the fence. I kind of thought the sand was covered because of the contaminated sand and stuff. That is the reason it was covered in the Torch Lake area.

That Houghton side breakwater area is a great place to go. There ae a couple of picnic tables up the hill from the water..well shaded. The breakwater would have been a bit dangerous to try to walk out on Yesterday. The waves were going over it, although there were a bunch of people that walked out on the Hancock side one.

I have a couple of pictures from my trip this weekend which I will put up as soon as I can figure out my user name and password for the guest gallery. I emailed Mary...
Check your email Dave, help is on its way!!! :->

The image above is a pretty neat one, with the old guys pitching shoes. It is actually a classic, isn't it?
Looks like a very nice day, all relaxed, nice woods...tranquil.

Thanks Mary :)

I have a few images up in the gallery of the Houghton Canal side breakwater and a couple of others. There is one there of a bunch of folks walking out on the Hancock side breakwater that has a somewhat strange feeling to it. Where are they going...coming from ????

Oh my gosh David! Those pictures are awesome. Would have loved to see some of your family though. I haven't seen you in years. Hi to your mom.
