Autumn has definitely arrived and the colors are springing up in various areas around the U.P., as shown in today's photos. Those top two shots were taken down here on the ground, by Rebecca Frederick, with an "up-close" view that shows us each and every vein of the leaves. Then from a few steps back, so you can take in a bit more of the scenery. Finally we get much, much further away, with E. Neil Harri, to view the trees down below that are dotting Baraga County with color. Sit back and bask in the splendor of Fall around the Keweenaw Peninsula

Our leaves won't change for about another month. Those are gorgeous. Love 'em Mary.

Those shots are gorgeous. When we were there 2 years ago in October, the colors were like this. Are they early this year, or were they late that year?
I remember back in grade school when we'd have to collect leaves for class. Every year we had the same project and none of us seemed to mind, probably because they were so beautiful and always smelled so good.

Some trees are coloring early this year thanks to the drought. Trees are stressed and are dumping their leaves early. Then again, there are some trees that always turn earlier than the herd. I remember a maple on H58 through the Pictured Rocks area that always had one branch flaming red in August. Every year. This year many leaves are just turning brown and drying, giving up on the season.

Good Morning. Drove up to Copper Harbor yesterday afternoon and could not believe the beautiful color, after the very dry summer was wondering what we could expect, guess the rains of September sure did wonders. Have a great wweekend.

About 2 weeks from now, Eastern Iowa will be pretty colorful. A drive along the Mississippi is my version of leaf looking, not quite like Lake Superior though. (sigh)

Oh yes..to be there!!! Leaves in N/W IL do not show much promise of changing color this year...just dropping off.

Hope we don't have a big wind come UP and blow all those beautiful leaves down before I come UP next Thursday.

Beautiful pictures! I especially love the aerial photo; thank you, Neil!
Mary, I am wondering if these photos are these current ones, as in are they an accurate representation of the current status of the color UP there, or are we enjoying photos from previous years? Part of my curiosity is wondering what the color might be up there for Mich Tech parents who might go up for Family Weekend in two weeks? Thanks.

Oops. I did a lousy editing job. The first sentence in the second paragraph should read, "Mary, I am wondering if these photos are current ones, so that they show an accurate representation of the color UP there now, or are we enjoying photos from previous years?".
Either way, they are beautiful pictures, and I love them. I am just curious to know, in case other Mich Tech parents might ask about the color status for Family Weekend two weeks from now. Many thanks!

Marianne, The third photo is from this fall. Please go to Neil's album and see for yourself. You will also see some of the most beautiful moose photos. One of his photos has 4 bulls. 2 sparring and 2 thinking about it. Great colorful photo of the Sturgeon River gorge taken on the 25th.

I'd place currency that these photos are current. But then i'am on my way to Cherokee,N.C. to gamble later on.When my 1st.wife and I married it was the middle of October. The color was in full then,1972.So we would gamble on going U.P. at that time of year,leave-ing from Southfield. It always worked to see it in full color. Can't say that about the marriage. Now my 2nd.wife, she was up there all the time. The 3rd.used to go U.P. before she met me,and loved to head U.P. as much as we could. My 4th.wife never been N. of Pontiac til she met me,and don't care if she ever goes N.of it again. And now that I have all the time to go,She says," GO!,don't come back!" I think she means it? I wonder what 5th. wife is going to be like? I'd like to act like one of those beautifull trees and leave right now. After all it is hunting season. When dose doe season open? It is so nice to come to Pasty Cenrtal to read and write about life in the U.P. and life of folks dreams of going home.Thanx for the memories,i'am a Pisces,i feel like a fish out of water.I'am going to cry.Maybe I should have wrote this on the cute What's Up Page. For some of us it's hard to stay on topic.Just read between the lines.

I can't make it tot he UP this weekend but I would be able to the next. Does anyone have a sense of whether the colors will still be good in the Houghton area the weekend of October 5th-7th?

Good morning..i absolutely love the bottom picture...the Aspens are really the only major change in leaves around here.

Hi One website for fall colors in Michigan says they expect peak color in the U.P. in about a week. Here is a website for a foliage report, too.
That last picture looks like the Huron Mountains.
By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, September 28, 2007 - 02:32 pm:
Look at the bottom photo. See the orange colored leaves on the tree in the middle of that photo; see it??? That's where I'm at right now on this Friday afternoon.
The bottom pic was taken last week just south of the Huron mountains. There are nice pockets of color when you get inland from the big lake.I like it when there is still some green. Green is a color too.The tops of the knobs are bare. They were just so dry this year. The leaves just turned brown and fell off. Baraga, Iron and Marquette counties are near the peak. Keweenaw and Houghton are about 60-70% as of today.

Trees here in South NJ have just started to get a slight hint of color. Within 2 weeks they will spring into color. Were still picking Tomatoes in the garden so the cold weather has not arrived. I'm a native of Michigan so I mis the changes in Covington in the North and the Changes in the Ypsilati and Ann Arbor areas too!

I love the way some maple leaves will have 2 colours like the pic near the top. Good pic!
