It was less than a month ago we received the news that Elmo Negro had passed away. For longtime visitors to the Pasty Cam, you will recall the building of his tower in Phoenix, and the view from there which we have enjoyed on several occasions. This morning I happened to spot this shot of Elmo himself up in the tower with Cale and Mellisa (perhaps neice and nephew?) in the gallery of Karen Budde. It struck me as being a day much like today - sunny and cool - perhaps a little less advanced colorwise, but like the one we are enjoying here in the Keweenaw as we begin a new week.

Thanks to Shawn Wyant and David Antikainen for the other two perspectives of the view. Won't be long before David's version will be the most accurate depiction. But first, get ready for the changing kaleidoscope of Autumn.

Yes that is my beauiful neice Melissa and her husband Cale. What a great day we had up in his tower, not only did he have a great personality he also was the best story teller I've ever met. The many thing he did in his life will be remembered. He was a great man and will be missed by all.

I have never been there but always wanted to check it out. Now I hear there have been no trespassing signs posted. Is this true? Yep Elmo will be missed......He sure could dance. :)

That is my husband and myself (Cale and Melissa Polkinghorne) with Elmo. The Negro's have always been real close friends with the Polkinghorne's; almost like family. Elmo will be missed greatly.

This picture was taken in the Fall of 2005.

Does anyone know when the tower was built? Also, what is the future of the tower?

By Tim Holland (Tholland) on Monday, September 17, 2007 - 10:38 pm:

What happened to everybody? There are fewer posts today than I recall in ages. The bottom picture alone is so good that it deserves comments from all of you pastyland viewers. Did everyone eat one too many pasties and fall asleep before they could hit "send?"

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, September 17, 2007 - 11:02 pm:

Tim, we saw the bottom view when we were up there this summer; my oldest son wanted to take us there. We thought it might be a cool sleigh ride in the winter. We also agreed amongst ourselves that it is prettier in the summer than it would be in the winter. Granted, that view is taken from an awesome angle.

The top two are interesting pictures. Charlie, are there more or fewer trees left in full color up there now? Are many of the leaves already down?

I'm about to fall asleep, sorry. I am waiting for my son to finish his homework. Tim, you should have asked that question earlier in the evening. :-)

Tim! you are so right! We just got home, turned this on, I saw that picture, said I gotta comment on that! Scrolled down and THEN saw your comment!
So here goes-- Copper Country, Keweenaw, or wherever--got to be one of the greatest beautiful pics ever! I've been out west in the mountains, down in the Smoky Mountains, Even the rugged hills of Antrim and Kalkaska countys (NLP) are splendid but this view is spectacular, no comparison--just like a classic painting! I know I've seen this but never from this view (or in the winter)

Roxanne,

I too have heard that the tower has been locked. Fortunately I was able to visit it several times. I also took plenty of pictures!
