If you look up Second Street when driving through South Range on
M-26, the view is a perfectly framed picture of this church. In fact,
as you drive or walk up Second Street, each stage of the trip is like
a photograph. No doubt the architect planned it that way. There is
a lovely stained glass window in the church dedicated to my Uncle
John--Officer Ohman to some of you former Techies.

Good Morning everyone, 57 degrees, sunny here in Houghton. Have a great day.

Good morning everybody! I used to live on 2nd Street. Beautiful day here. Going to get some planting done today and then we're going to go fishing for supper.

I saw the unusually large gable above the entrance and immediately thought of architect Venturi's house designed for his mother, the first building of the post-modernist period. I am in the middle of reading 'A Place of My Own' by Michael Pollan, where he discusses the use of the gable in vernacular buildings (like houses) and in post-modernist constructions where it is used as a 'sign' separated from its structural origins. Probably the silliest architectural period in history. Well, in competition with the baroque, anyway.

Knowing the common sense attitude of the North, I suspect that here the gable is used for practical reasons: because it sheds snow so well and bears the weight of high winds and heavy snowfalls.

Sure am proud that Pennie got the early bird, I was still in bed. Grandkids are keeping me off the computer they are all coputer literate and have to keep in touch with their friends.

Thank you Mikie and Ron. I have to give credit to my small bladder and my daughters allergies waking me up. :)

I'am back from our vacation in Gatlinburg,TN. 52 miles from home. Now one could ask,"why take a vacation so close to home".It's just that we been doing it for 17 years on or around Barbie's B-Day back when we lived in Michigan. We used to camp in a Pop-up camper. Now we do it in a Resort. We still had to put up with Bears,as it must have taken over some of there land.No matter how many times I've been to Cades Cove,I could go every day.I just finished catching up on a week of Pasty Cam notes.Must get up an streach now.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Sunday, August 26, 2007 - 10:53 pm:

Yeah Dave I remember the time you guys camped with that pop-up between the circle drives in the woods up at our Kalkaska place! The kids were just junior high? Then the 2 or 3 times here at our place out on the lawn by the pond! CB Radios and all! Those were the days! We were all supposed to go UP to the Keweenaw and camp somewhere some day--remember? Don't look like that's going to happen anytime soon! AY?
