Drive to the end of the pavement on M-107, in Ontonagon County and you'll discover a beautiful reward. It's called the Lake of the Clouds and it's located in the Porcupine Mountains State Park. Today's Pasty Cammist, Peg Hardt and company found this jewel in the U.P. They look like they're standing high enough up on that rock outcropping to touch the few clouds in the sky there

Beautiful lake & park! Have only been there once, but plan to visit it again some day.

This site is probably my first introduction to the Porkies many years ago when my folks lived in White Pine. Always a fabulous view any time of the year. And how many of us have a shot with this geat background?

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 - 05:56 am:

Mskatie, my wife had a cousin who along with her husband ran the grocery store in White Pine until the mine closed I believe. They moved to Wisconcin. Both are deceased now.

I was going to go there once, but the road was impassible due to slushy snow. My timing never was very good. I really enjoy the daily pictures. Hope someday to get back UP and take some of my own.

I haven't been there either. Lived there half my life my never made it to the Porkies. One of these years I will though.

I have been there once, went backpacking when I was 10 for a weekend. We saw a bear cub, and its mom decided to send our backpacks all over the campsite during the night. She just sniffed, no damage since the food was hanging from a tree.

i've got at least 10-12 different family photos from this exact spot, but i DONT have a winter version !! I'd love to see a winter family photo on the top of lake of the clouds with the frozen tundra in the background ....

This spot is also very beautiful to view in the snowy winter months! Bob and I have made many snowmobile trips to see it!

That's a nice picture, Peg Hardt. We've been there a couple of times back in the early 1980's, and both times it was cloudy. I'm pretty sure we have a picture or two, but they were not very good pictures, and they are film, not digital, if I could even find them.

Lake of the Clouds is a true gem. It is almost impossible to believe such a natural place still exists; that mankind has not found a way to commercialize it. The entire Porkies State Park is wonderful as was so often captured in Dan Urbanski's photos.

This weekend, The 3rd Annual Porcupine Mountains Music Festival takes place at the ski area of the park. The proceeds from this wonderful event benefit the "Friends of the Porkies" The weather this weekend looks like it's going to cooperate,so consider attending. Information about the Festival can be found on the web at:

This is a gorgeous spot. I've only seen it in the summer, but I can only imagine how beautiful it must be in the fall. I wish the drive wasn't so long!

By Tim Holland (Tholland) on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 - 06:40 pm:

One of my favorite photos from this site is when someone "photo-shopped" (digitally altered) an image to make it look like the Gay smokestack was falling over. I would like to see a photo shop pix of a cougar, a bear and a moose posing in front of Lake of the Clouds.

Mary says: Ok, I'll 'fess up, I'm the culprit responsible for the Photoshop work on the Gay Smokestack shot back in the Archives on April 1st, 2004. I'm still chuckling about that one. No promises on your request for the other shot though! :->

Timber!!

My kids and I hiked down to the bridge in early August and I thought, "So I haven't done it in 20 years and who cares if it is 96 degrees?" My daughter commented on how red my face was on the way back up. It is UP!
