A Finnish-American internet friend advised me that contrary to popular opinion, the pasty originated in Italy. His explanation was that the word pasty is taken from the Italian word "pasticcio", which is defined as a meat pie. The Italian miners apparently brought the pasty to Cornwall when they went there to work in the mines.
