Now - I can't say that I've ever seen a butterfly floating on water before. Floating on air is what these graceful insects do best, but Frederic W. Koski captured several shots of a Monarch butterfly afloat on the lake. Water adds another dimension to whatever skims its surface, by reflecting another extension like the third wing in the bottom photo. Here in the Upper Peninsula, we're lucky to be surrounded by so many lakes to mirror all the beauty around us, creating those "double your pleasure" moments!

Here in Delta County I know a lady who has been active for years
in the protection and fostering of butterflies. Last week I heard
her saying this has been a wonderful summer for butterflies.
She has seen more than ever. That seems to be especially true
of monarchs like the one here. She didn't know why this was
such a good year though. Any ideas?

I have just received the latest issue of the Lake Superior Magazine. There's a very interesting article about butterflies around the region in it. Also, beautiful pictures ..but these are much better! Thanks for sharing.

Just started to collect Monarch catepillars here in Mid Mich, ( We raise, tag and release). A lot better year than last year I have to say so too. Its a whole lot drier this year than last, so I don't know why this year is better. Soon our parlor will be aflutter with the newly emerging butterflies. Ahhh, the circle of life.

Renee,

They are self adhesive tags that are numbered and then applied to a wing. We have been involved in this, http://monarchwatch.org/ for 5 yrs now.

We get the Lake Superior Magazine too. It's really great!!!

By Therese (Therese) on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 - 10:10 pm:

The photos are lovely but I am wondering what happened to the butterfly afterwards. I have seen monarchs floating dead in the water. Maybe if you see one with one or both wings on the water trapped by surface tension, you should lift it out and set it on a leaf to dry.

Hey, I recognize those pics, thanks for showing em' today!
