Brooke Gubacz was recently in the Brimley area, which is on the eastern end of the U.P., near Sault Ste. Marie and found herself above Monocle Lake looking down! Quite the view from this lookout for sure, located near Mission Hill Cemetery, as pictured in the second photo, taken by Martha Lewis. I'm really not familiar with this area, so I'm going to leave it up to you, the viewers, to give us some more information. Perhaps Brooke and/or Martha will be able to chime in too!

Went here several years ago in the autumn - great views - esp. with the brightly colored leaves!

This is the first time I was there and it wasn't raining. Finally got a good shot.

One of my favorite spots in the winter. Always a nice stop (the look-out, not that cemetery, that is) before heading into Brimley on the snowmobiles. We affectionately refered to it as Make-Out Mt aftering hearing some others at the hotel referencing it as that, much easier to remember, ha.

That is such an interesting looking cemetery. Is it still being used and how old is it?

What a view. You folks sure are blessed with natural lakes. Only ones we have down here...Missouri...are man-made, and can fluctuate by 20 or more feet, depending on the time of year.

We were just in the Brimley area this past week, stayed at BayView National campground. What a hidden gem if you like primative camping, 12 bucks a nite and right on the lake shore. I got a lot of nice sunset pics and one that I am trying to post here but to no avail. Went thru the Monacle Lake campground, water is quite low. Also at Taq. Falls, wasn't as much water going over as there were in years past. If anyone can help in how to post pics it would be greatly appreciated.

I have visited this spot several times. Not only is it a great view with amazing color in the fall but the cemetery is has several interesting markers. One of them is the grave site for eight sailors from the steamer Myron which sank in 1919. The Myron's captain stayed with the boat and survived. The sailers took to the life boats and were found frozen in ice in the spring of 1920.

Love the picture, but I believe that is Spectacle lake (with the point sticking into the middle). Monocle lake (the more roundish one)is just to the north. We used to visit my cousins cabin on Waiska Bay (Bay MIlls). What a great place to play!

We've been to this site a couple of times. It is a beautiful view and oh so peaceful. Wondered about the name of the lake when we were there.

Yes, David is right. It is Spectacle Lake. I grew up in Sault Ste. Marie and Specatacle Lake was a place we went to often. In fact last Fall our Hiking Group did some trails and GEO caching in that area which are lots of fun. IT IS A VERY BEAUTIFUL VIEW FROM UP TOP THERE. The road which goes up there use to be almost impassable at times. What a treat it was to go.. just to see if one could reach the top. There have been some major improvements to the road over the years. However if you don't like heights - DO NOT DRIVE UP....GOING DOWN IS MUCH EASIER.

I have been up there several times over the years, and I have two experiences that stand out to me. One was while enjoying the look-out over Spectacle Lake, we started to hear the beating of Native American drums along with some chanting. There was a Pow Wow going on nearby and the sound carried so clearly over the water, I almost felt like we were there. It was really special.
The other memory was finding a special wooden plague my mother-in-law (from the Soo) nailed to a tree in honor of her best friend who had died. Her friend was buried somewhere else, but Mission Hill had always been a special place to her. She had it custom-made with a quote that was something like "Friends: Two bodies sharing one soul." Years after my mother-in-law passed away, I was able to still find it on that tree, although it was quite worn. I wonder if it's still there. It's definitely a beautiful and peaceful place.

My sister lives five minutes from Mission Hill, in Brimley. I visit this site several times a year. I believe Mission Hill is sort of a "sacred" spot for the Ojibwe Indians there. It's a great place for a picnic!

Also the Lake Superior Beaches, between Paradise and Brimley, are some of the warmest Lake Superior Beaches I've swam in.

Cindy...yes, it's still there, at least it was the last time I was there....3 yrs ago, I think. Have noticed and appreciated it many times, wondering who and why...now I know! :)

Caryl, Thank you so much. I was hoping that someone may have seen it there, but I thought it was a slim chance. I'm so glad that you responded. I'm going to have to stop there when I'm in the U.P. in a couple of weeks. I think about my mother-in-law a lot, and I still miss her after all of these years.
