Katie Tormala was exploring the U.P. and happened by the Ontonagon Marina, snapping a couple shots while there. The most interesting (at least to me), is this old metal boat. Looks like a houseboat of sorts, but then also reminds me of a Navy ship, perhaps because of the metal gray color too. It would be fun to take a tour of the inside of this vessel and even more interesting to hear the history of her sailing days and why she's no longer floating.

I just have to spend some time in Ontonagon one of these times when there's more time. There's always way too much to do and see and not nearly enough time to do it all. But my husband's only been through there so we have to visit at some point.

Well, I think my wife and I got the story on this boat several
weeks ago when we were at the U.P. History Conference up at
Ontonagon. Bruce Johanson was our guide, and he knows
everything about the history of Ontonagon. Unfortunately, he
was telling us about this boat about five p.m., and we had been
absorbing knowledge since 9 that morning. By that time we
were sort of tired and thinking more about dinner in an hour
than about this boat. I think Bruce said this had been a navy
boat turned into a fishing boat and then headed to the junk pile
when the Ontonagon Historical Society was offered the boat. I
think down the road (maybe after fixing up the lighthouse more)
Bruce and his stalwarts will be working on this boat. We will
know more then.

More on Ontonagon. I got to thinking about Deb saying she and
her husband might be travelling to Ontonagon. If they (or
anyone) does, be sure to stop at the museum downtown. It is
one of those amazing U.P. historical museums with just tons of
stuff to see. Also, I don't think you can get to the lighthouse (it
is on the grounds of the paper mill which takes a dim view of
unauthorized visitors for good reasons) without going on a tour
bus run out of the museum, and like all lighthouses, it is worth a
visit.

Thanks for all the info, Charles. We'll sure keep it all in mind. And I'm quite the lighthouse buff.

Yeah! Ontonagon...Go Gladiators! Wow, seems like yesterday, but it was 31 years ago that I graduated from those hallowed halls.

Charlesinesky. I better jump in here on the boat issue. That boat has never been in the water. I helped fabricate it at A & L Fabricating in $ Bay in 1986. I m not aware if the owner has donated it however. I ve got a few picture of it I ll try and locate if anyone is interested in seeing how it got from $ Bay to Ontanogon as a trailer

That is true about seeing the lighthouse...you must take the tour to get there and be sure you get Mr. Johanson as he is the best guide! My greatgrandfather was a keeper there, so it really interested me when we did the tour. And the museum is loaded with a lot of wonderful history that is worth seeing, plus there is a gift shop that is worth visiting. Can hardly wait to go back up as it is toooooooooooooo hot here in Ohio!!
