If only we could all enjoy the sheer pleasure of a carefree run on the beach, not just any beach, but the sands of Bete Grise, here in the Keweenaw. These youngsters, belonging to Jeremy TePaske, are a glowing example of what summer is supposed to be... warm weather, sunny skies, fun with friends (both two legged and four!) and refreshing water nearby. In that second shot, the young man seems to be sinking in the sand, either that or he's probably trying to warm his legs in the solar heated sands after taking a dip in Superior!

Good Morning:
That beach looks like fun. After the 90 degree plus weather here in NE central Missouri, A dip in the big lake would feel mighty pleasant.

I'm with Lowell. We've had high 90's with a heat index in the 100's and Lake Superior would have felt wonderful. However, here in MN, the beaches are nothing like they are UP there. I knew that had to be Bete Grise as soon as I saw it. Lucky kids.

By Sue (Sussu) on Monday, July 9, 2007 - 08:25 am:

The low lake level does have some advantages. Bete Gris has a wider beach than in past years and the water is quite shallow for kids to enjoy swimming.

Hi all
I just got back from a week's vacation up north (Cheboygan, in the northern lower). I took one last dip in Lake Huron yesterday before setting out. I heartily wished I had that nice cool, clean lake to jump into at the end of my drive. House was 86 degrees, outside temp was in the 90's.

Those were the days.

it's a shame a kid can't dig like that on the Jersey shore at LBI anymore. Seems the engineers brought up thousands of possibly live munitions in a beach refurbishing project this past winter. Now there are signs posted to dig no deeper than 12".

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, July 9, 2007 - 01:52 pm:

That's effective to post a sign that says not to dig deeper than 12" because little kids who are inclined to dig in the sand always carry a ruler with them and always know how to read signs put up by grown ups. Why can't those engineers and development companies clean up the problem before someone who is just having an innocent good time gets hurt. It is a terrible shame.

Right on, Cindy, I'm in total agreement with you!

With the recent cave-in's with sand holes taking adult and childrens lives, making a hole, never deeper than 12" is a good rule of thumb. Death by cave-in is rarely heard of, but a real summer tragedy that does happen more and more often. www.boston.com

Very good rule of thumb....Electrician friend of mine lost one of his sons a year ago to a cave in of a kid dug tunnel near Au Train.....That was without a doubt the hardest funeral I ever attended....There is absolutely nothing you can say......and I have known this fellow for over 20 years.... I just burst into tears when I saw him at the funeral home in Ferndale and could not talk.......He ended up comforting me.....play careful kids........

We did the 4th at Bete Grise and then the parade at Gay. (Timed it just right but don't tell the wife) Lots of fog and about 4 people on the beach.....and we were two of them....what a treasure......

I remember that. How terribly sad for that family and friends!
