I can't quite pinpoint where Lou Weber is standing to take this photo, but he says it's somewhere across the Portage, from Houghton. The buildings are easily singled out in this shot, there's St. Ignatius church, with its steeple pointing skyward and the old Kirkish building, with the painted sign on the side, still brightly advertising, just to name a few. It really is a unique angle that you don't normally view Houghton from. Kind of nice for those of us who are always rushing to and from wherever we're bound, not noticing how different places look from other perspectives.

Neat shot. The church just stands right out--almost European.

Makes it look closer than it is in that view.

I always look for Trinity Episcopal Church , which you you can see in this picture too. In the winter, I like to look at the roof of Trinity to see the snow that had fallen overnight.

I was sad to hear of the untimely death of Bishop Kelsey , bishop of Nothern Michigan. He was a unique bishop in an area that covers such a large territory as the Upper Peninsula. To keep the congegations going and lively he involved the laity much much more.

Houghton has so many beautiful old churches! I hope they will never be torn down to make "warehouse" and box churches.

I literally stumbled into this site. My parents (mom a Finn.,and dad Yugoslavian) are from Keweenaw county. I spent much of my young life enjoying God's country and good friends. In recent years I have only passed through the keweenaw on my way to Isle Royale. However, after looking at everyone's beautiful pictures and reading the blogs, I realize how homesick I am. Hello, to my old friends I haven't seen in a while. Do you remember me? May our trails meet again one day soon. I miss Parkside bakery and Eli's pasties too!
