A nice view of the pedestrian bridge - formerly the main bridge over Eagle River - as seen 8 years ago on the Pasty Cam.

Good Morning, All from mid-Michigan! I need to get back to work packing, so we can head UP to Houghton this morning to see our Mich Tech son and visit one of our very favorite areas! Only my husband has been up there in the last couple of years, so the rest of us are really looking forward to it! I wish it were longer, but we have to come home on Sunday or Monday morning at the very latest because of appointments at home.

Good morning from sunny, but cooler, MN.

When I got up it was 64 and has finally gotten to 68. We didn't get rain last night--who knew, but it is still chilly here.

My husband and I are coming to the Copper Country in August, but we want to explore the area around Skanee/Pequaming for just a day or so first. Does anyone know anything about Gabe's Summer Suites or the Aurora Borealis Cabins in Skanee? Thanks.

By David (Dave) on Thursday, June 28, 2007 - 12:24 pm:

What is the status of the other old bridge in Eagle River? It had been closed to foot traffic. Is it gone? Will it be repaired?

By Kenty (Dashamo) on Thursday, June 28, 2007 - 01:23 pm:

I remember when I attended the old Mohawk school back in the 60's the fifth graders went to Eagle River for our end of the year/beginning of the summer picnic. The boys would smuggle spear tips in their lunches, we'd find some sturdy sticks or branches and then we'd go under the bridge and spear suckers. Just didn't want Miss Sullivan to catch you!!!! LOL Those were great times.

Cindy --

I stayed at Gabes Summer Suites a few times maybe 15 years ago. It was just after they opened, I think. At the time there were two small cottages that were very nice. There was a great dock there and you could rent a boat and motor at a reasonable price. Great view looking across Huron Bay, which is maybe 3/4 mile wide there (if I remeber right). If you fish, it's not far from good fishing at Reed's Bay, on the opposite shore and a bit further north. It's a super place to rent a boat for a sunset cruise on Huron Bay, which is nicely protected from the larger swells of Lake Superior. If it's still pretty much the same as it was then, you'd enjoy a stay there.

Geebeed, Where in central Indiana are you? I live about five miles south of Union City.

By s. dearing (Geebeed) on Thursday, June 28, 2007 - 06:02 pm:

Just south of the Marion County line. Marion County is Indianapolis.

By Cindy Barga (Hoosiergirl) on Thursday, June 28, 2007 - 08:05 pm:

Union City rests on the Ohio-Indiana state line, in Randolph County. Half of our town is in Indiana, half in Ohio. Before Indiana adopted daylight savings time, it could be pretty confusing.

Well, we're packed and ready to leave tomorrow. Too bad we can't
make it the the Pasty Fest. Another year, I hope. I enjoyed the
article about Pasty Fest in the " Mining Gazette."

Dunerat, thank you very much for your response to my question. Hunt's Guide to the U.P. gives a good review also. I know the area is beautiful from pictures I've seen, but it's always good to get an opinion from someone who has been there. I appreciate it and I'm looking forward to our trip.

Re: the walking bridge in Eagle River...it is going to be restored....they got a grant I think.......can't remember what my friend told me exactly. Her family has been in Eagle River since just about the begining.....They owned the first jail in Houghton County, with a small bar next to it... the old post office....and a couple other houses that have been sold.

One week more then the soothing waters of Mother Superior for two glorious weeks. Does anyone know if the Strawberry fest in Chassel is next Sat? Last time we went thru there we had to wait about an hour for the parade. Didn't really mind at all-really enjoyed the people and the unique floats.
