I saw this very scene last night out of the window in Booth A at the Hut. The view is straight down US-41, and I happened to glance out just as a deer darted across. I actually thought of this photo, and I'm surprised to see it appear this morning on our daily retro-post of 8 years ago.

Good morning! You would think that in 8 years, that this deer would have learned to cross at a deer crossing sign!

Good Morning! It's gonna be HOT today!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 06:56 am:

Good morning! Another hot day in mid MN.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 07:00 am:

Yes, it will be hot. I am going to avoid job sites today if possible. Paul, they should train the deer to look both ways. Anybody notice that there are a lot more on the side of the road this year than normal? Must have been the mild winter. I always keep a look out since I don't live in the city but they are really testing my reflexes this year!

By Vicky P (Vickyp) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 07:20 am:

Good Morning. I wonder how many others are right behind that guy getting ready to dart across the road? Try to keep cool today!

It's deja vu, Charlie!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 07:34 am:

Good morning from a soggy Houston!!

Don't deer know that only bucks can cross safely at a deer crossing sign?? I mean look at the sign; do you see a picture of a doe on them?? No, it's a deer with horns. I'm surprised someone hasn't screamed gender bias or descrimination against doe's........ ;-)

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 07:39 am:

Capt., Some of the deer signs down here someone had put red reflectors on so they looked like Rudolph. Those reflectors are mostly gone though. Maybe that was a hint to fly over the road instead of run.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 08:13 am:

Here in eastern Iowa our deer crossing signs have several purposes other than to alert deer crossing...they are used as targets for pre-deer season practice, also the red painted noses, and some the deer on the signs are painted green to promote the tractor preference of some individuals.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 09:17 am:

Good Morning, from mid-Michigan, where it's supposed to be a scorcher today, with high humidity! Capt Paul, I can hear the violins playing from you & Dr Nat there in hot, soggy Houston.:-) I hope we all manage to stay cool (& dry) today! Congrats, Paulwebbtroll, on your Early Bird!

On deer crossings: I think those are there to tell the deer will cross elsewhere! :-) I hit the last of 4 deer (I slowed down when the first one crossed the road) when I was 19 and pulling a boat in Texas. Anyway, I had managed to slow down in time to keep the trailer under control, etc. Three years ago now, my husband hit a deer on the Interstate in Wyoming, where the speed limit is 75.

I'm wondering how many Pasty readers have managed not to hit a deer? At least around here, the serious injuries & deaths in car-deer accidents result when the drivers lose control of their cars, trying to swerve to miss the deer. The best thing that you can do is to slow down quickly but safely, keeping both hands firmly on the steering wheel, making sure that you don't swerve. Where there is one deer, there are usually at least a couple more nearby. I understand that the deer herd numbers are steadily increasing in both of Michigan's peninsulas. Midland County ranks near the top of the number of car-deer collisions in Michigan annually, btw.

Not always does one have the chance to slow down quickly to avoid a deer hit, especially at night.

By s. dearing (Geebeed) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 09:37 am:

Good Morning! Another "steam bath" kind of day for central Indiana.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 09:48 am:

Bobbysgirl, you're right--you can't always slow down quickly enough to completely avoid a deer collision. I meant to say that it is better to actually hit the deer, rather than swerve, trying to avoid it & losing control of your car in the process. That's when you are more apt to be seriously injured or worse.

BTW, when my son went back UP to Houghton for summer school in May, the driver of the car that he was riding in did just as recommended. She slowed down, but still hit the deer, just 1 mile east of the MTU campus! No one was injured. While there was some damage to the car, it was not major damage.

Regrettos it's 360 as of now. Hubby has to be the "Lookout" when traveling with his friends anywhere. They drive, he looks. We've only seen one moose in all of the years (17) traveling back & forth to the CC from Gwinn. Many deer though.

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 11:38 am:

Regrettos 360. I've seen alot of deer in traveling back & forth to the CC in 17 years. But have only seen one moose in all of that time.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 01:36 pm:

Rather than hitting a deer, I had the deer hit me. Ran into the fender behind the drivers side rear wheel. Never even saw the thing. Felt like the car had suddenly got hard rubber wheels(like on kids tricycles) and ran over a brick. Scared the daylights outta me. The only thing worse was having to go home and face Dad.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 02:23 pm:

Looks like the UP and Keweenaw are going to get rocked later today with a pretty good line of thunderstorms forming over Wisconsin right now. I just checked and it was 86 in Houghton, which is only 4 degrees cooler than Houston, but Houghton doesn't have the humidity and corresponding heat index of 104.

Oh well, time for another boring meeting!!! I'll just keep thinking "39 more days, 39 more days....." ;-)

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, June 18, 2007 - 03:11 pm:

I hit one New Years day 1991. I was 16 and on my way to the next town to pick up my younger Brother at his friends, he asked why it took me so long to get there. I had to stop because I hit a deer. As a true Michigan boy he did not ask "are you OK?" he said "Did you get the meat?"
