I had forgotten about so many of these pictures we're recalling these days from 8 years ago. It seems that this used to be on the way from Mohawk to Fulton, and may still be there for all I know. We decided early on in the Pasty Cam to make a conscious effort to include a sign of some kind every week.

Good Morning From Mishawaka IN

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 07:42 am:

Looking somewhat worse for wear, the building is still there.

By jefflarae (Jefflarae) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 07:53 am:

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 08:31 am:

Good morning. Congrats Marianne!

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 09:15 am:

Top o' the mornin' everyone. Hope your day looks as great as mine. High in the low 70's, very little humidity. Going painting to our nearby state park. Couuldn't have a better day if I had ordered it.The only way it could be better is if I were in the UP!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 09:24 am:

Look at that airstream! I'll bet it has some stories to tell. The stone building beside it looks like one of the old ones on old Rte. 66.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 09:28 am:

congrats Marianne, wishing you many more first. Kay, what color are you going to paint the park, RED? kay is a very talented artist and made me a water color book mark, that is used in the one book that I own. The book was given to me by Dr. John my little brother and is about the geneology in the French Candians in Michigan [blatant brag, and should be removed] It is nice having people that you are proud of in your life. Blue skys and grandkids here with Precious and I in Berkley, I am still complaining about my aches and pains, but Precious is doing well, she has to wear a collar for the rest of the summer, but the good thing about it is if she stands next to the t.v. the reception is better.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 09:45 am:

Coming UP Monday! I think we'll do the Ambassador tostada pizza thing Tuesday and the Harbor Haus Wednesday. It's all about the food (and the waterfalls)!

By Cotton (Cotton) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 12:20 pm:

The Bucket was bar in Mohawk many years ago. It was called the "bucket of blood" by local people in the area Really don't know why. Maybe it was because of all of the fights that went on in there. Anyone from that way know??? I think it closed in th late 60's or early 70's.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 12:36 pm:

Good afternoon from Mishawaka, IN. It is a beautiful day here in northern IN. I could take all the days of summer being like this-temp low to mid 70s. I know we need rain. After dark and before the sun rises would work for me.

Enjoy your weekend.

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 12:55 pm:

The Bucket I believe closed up in the 70's. What a dive it was, a basic hole in the wall type of a bar.

By Doug (Greenhermit) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 02:16 pm:

As I recall, the Bucket of Blood was still open in the mid to late 70's when it served as one of many refreshment stops along an annual early May smelting run that used to take place from Ontonagon to Lac la Belle around that time.

By Ken, Kalamazoo, MI (Kenkazoo) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 03:34 pm:

Coming UP on Wednesday and staying for Bridgefest over next weekend. A few glorious days in the Copper Country.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 03:54 pm:

my guess is the "Bucket of Blood" refers to a pub in Cornwall that was recently seen on the Cornwall cam.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 05:22 pm:

We seem to be on a Cornish theme today. I have never noticed this
building in my travels.

Mikie--I will be interested in having a look at your brother's book.
The French Canadian connection is an important one in the state of
Michigan (oh yeah...and elsewhere). Glad you and Precious are
feeling better.

By Kenty (Dashamo) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 07:27 pm:

The Bucket is located on Fulton Avenue, sort of kitty corner across the street from Bethany Lutheran Church. Believe it or not, there was a 2 lane bowling alley in there. When we were kids, the guy who tended bar, John Salata (aka Crabby Jack), used to let us kids bowl for 10 cents a game. And we had to set our own pins!!

By Kenty (Dashamo) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 07:29 pm:

Another note: I seem to remember my Grandfather telling me that the Bucket was actually built in the foundation of an old mining building. If you look at the picture, it seems as though he was right.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 08:54 pm:

I have seen several boats on the canal today -- what fun!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Sunday, June 10, 2007 - 09:59 am:

Mikie, I would also like to know where I can find your brothers book. My dads side is French Canadian he was born in Windsor, and Moms are Yoopers (can someone tell me why the kids told me I talked funny while I was in Elementary school in lower Michigan?)

By Terry Vittone (Tvc15) on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 - 05:42 pm:

My grandfather, Jockomo Vittone, opened the Bucket in the
30’s. It burned down in 1939 and was rebuilt. It was
nicknamed “the bucket of blood” because the copper miners
were keen to fight, especially after a few (or more) drinks. He
bought the bowling alleys from an older building in Mohawk,
and he moved them himself.
