I was surprised this morning to see the Old Country Haus Restaurant in the picture from eight years ago, next to Vic's Cabins in Kearsarge. The building has since been coverted to an insurance office which is about to open.

Darn you Deb!!! You beat me again!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, June 7, 2007 - 07:30 am:

Wouldn't be much fun for me if I didn't. I wouldn't get much enjoyment out of that. It was close, only 2 minutes.

What's the count?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, June 7, 2007 - 07:52 am:

Old Country Haus or Vic's that has been converted to an insurance office?? As many times as I had driven past that place, I never stopped in for dinner. I knew the Hut was not far away and always stopped there. Looks like the Dr. and I will be stopping at the Hut this July when we're there.....

By Dale Beitz (Dbeitz) on Thursday, June 7, 2007 - 08:23 am:

It's sad to hear that the Old Country Haus is no longer a restaurant. I know they'd been closed for a while, but hadn't heard that the building was being re-used for anything. I suppose that's better than the building sitting idle and slowly falling apart. We used to go there for the Friday fish frys and a bottle or three of Dortmunder Union Dark during my MTU days. On the flip side, glad to hear that the Hut is doing well.

By Alicia Marshall (Aliciak) on Thursday, June 7, 2007 - 08:36 am:

I will always remember this as the old Sportsman's bar. It was owned by Chunka Pieti.
My grandparents had the house behind it.
My Uncle and Aunt Pep and Elizabeth Winquist
had the house kitty corner across from the bar on U.S. 41. My Great Aunt Ida Säkkinen lived on U.S. 41 further North. Neil Harri has a photo taken of her in his collection. My Dad used to sing a song to her, "Auntie Ida, Sweet as Apple cider". She was a real sweetheart.
Memories...

Good Morning, going to be a hot one!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, June 7, 2007 - 09:08 am:

Good morning, had to take off a bandage again, boy do they hurt coming off. You probaly heard the yell from here. My doctor son in law came down from Manistee to check us out and Precious had him pulling weeds from the garden. Most expensive gardner we will ever have. Michelle and her kids from Manistee are staying with us. I miss the solitude, and being able to watch Law and Order twenty four hours if I want, instead it is Sponge Bob, and several other shows. I will be happy when Precious goes back to work and I am the master of the house again. Too many bosses now and I am the only one they can boss around. Meghan sn Precious are sitting in the kitchen while Precious has her coffee and Meghan has breakfast. That part of them being here I like.

What is on the tables? It looks like sea shells.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, June 7, 2007 - 09:52 am:

Good Morning, Everyone from mid-Michigan, where it will be a hot one today, at 90 or above!

I woke up this morning to a phone call from our neighbor, asking if our power was on, which it was not. I was really glad he called, because we needed to get up to get our youngest off to school to help check in band instruments, etc. The great news is that Consumers Power FINALLY managed to get our power back on just now. That would have been almost unbearable to have no air conditioning today, when it is supposed to be so hot!

It's good to hear from you, Mikie! I'm really happy to hear that Precious is able to sit up at the table now! The last I heard, she was supposed to stay in bed for awhile. I can imagine that good old Sponge Bob is on a lot of the time, with your little ones around. :-) My sons used to like to watch Sponge Bob, but my husband has always hated Sponge Bob, so it got to the point it was kind of funny, watching the "tug of war" over the TV. I hope you and Precious continue on your roads to full recovery!

How are Mary's mom & Keving doing? I've thought about them this week and hoping they are both improving, too!

Sounds like Mikie is getting back to his fiesty self! Love to hear it!

Morning All!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, June 7, 2007 - 10:34 am:

The beef rouladen at the Country Haus was to die for! Now I have to get it at the Harbor Haus, maybe next week! I've got an outdoor retirement party in the 90 degree heat today. Then open houses Saturday and Sunday. So if we skip out on the church Ad Board meeting Tuesday of which my husband is chair, we can come UP Monday! But gotta be back to pop corn in our big open kettle Saturday at a senior citizens' apartment. Got the air fixed in my minivan yesterday (and am $600 poorer), but otherwise we're good to go! We'll be arriving at a knee-deep lawn in Aura late in the afternoon and my hubby will begin mowing as I unpack and clean the cottage. He looks at the bright side though, what better view while mowing than across Lake Superior! First thing I should do is put up the suction cup hummingbird feeder on the living room window. The hummingbirds will come immediately as they fly from house to house down the shoreline. So that's what I have to enjoy as I dust!

"Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Sponge Bob Square Pants, Sponge............." What Grandparent can't recite those words?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, June 7, 2007 - 03:10 pm:

Look on the bright side Mikie, at least you and Precious are still alive to watch SpongeBob. Besides Mikie your not allowed to leave this world yet.... who else would I get historic Chrysler information from??? ;-)

We're actually going to be in Berkely in August after leaving the copper country to see my Uncle who has also had a time of it health-wise as well. I'm glad to say he is recovering very well, but for a while this past winter it didn't look real good.

I see that at least the Houghton area is under a tornado watch now through tonight. There is some really nasty weather in Wisconsin and south. Some of it could also be headed our way here in mid-Michigan through overnight. I hope we all stay safe! :-)

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, June 7, 2007 - 08:06 pm:

Just came in from enjoying the weather from the deck overlooking the Mississippi. Much thunder in the west and very windy. Hope no tornados this week like last Friday. Grandview, Muscatine,Fruitland and Bellvue Iowa were hit pretty hard. Always could use the rain tho.
