A mystery photo eight years ago today on the Pasty Cam turned out to be the back of an old WPA era bench that used to appear all around Keweenaw County.

Good Morning!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 09:46 am:

I actually had to work for this early bird, but at least I was able to have a chance at it. Usually you guys are up way too early for me!!! :P

Charlie's "words of wisdom" for today's mystery photo got me to thinking about a possible neat feature on here. How hard/easy would it be to have a weekly or monthly contest to identify a mystery location from around the U.P.?? I'm not sure how it would work or what prizes there could be (maybe a calender, or free munchies at the Hut), but it's just a thought I came up with.

Any thoughts on the idea??

By Douginwi (Douginwi) on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 09:52 am:

Good Morning!

Wondering if we can get some information on another question. We are going to be over by the Mackinac Bridge for the big 50th anniversary celebration in July. We plan on seeing the fireworks that are scheduled for the evening of July 28. Does anyone know which side of the bridge is best for viewing? Any suggestions on a particularly good place (like a park) from which to view them? We are not from the area, so we don't know. Thanks!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 09:58 am:

Did you know the fireworks will be shot from both sides of the Bridge simultaneously?

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 10:22 am:

Interesting idea Cap't Paul. I think it would be great fun!

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 11:05 am:

I had heard that the fireworks will be shot off from barges, not sure if that is the case or not. We will be there are the same time, think we are staying on the St. Ignace side. Suppose you could send an email to the Mackinaw Bridge Authority, they would probably have the info about where the fireworks are being shot off from.

Oh and Deb, only 51 days.

Also, check the Chamber of Commerce sites for Mackinac City and St. Ignace.

Good afternoon all. My first day of summer break. Now I can check this site out during the day instead late evening. August 13th will be here before I know it. The last time I have to worry about going back to school. On May 31, 2008 I will retire. More time for trips to the UP.

Good Morning all, well I made it through another event in my life. Never had a colapsed lung before, it hurts. I missed the weekend since I was in Beaumont Hospital far, better then the previous one I was in. Precious is mending and is in a relative good mood since she sees all the grandbabies daily now.I sure am lucky having the friends I have, ones who live close are helping and the ones on the line who have helped keep me in good spirits. I also have six broken ribs. Thanks again everyone. Capt. glad you got the prize today, now try for tomorrow.
Mikie

Glad to see you and Precious are perking up Mikie! I hope Mary's Mom is getting better, her family has had a lot thrown at them lately. God Bless!

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 02:29 pm:

Hi all,

Just want to thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes for my Mom. The only plus of her being flown to Ann Arbor by Airlifeline and us driving down to be with her, is that she's at the Univ. of Mich. Hospital, which is 40 mintues away from where Kevin is at Karmanos Cancer Institute, so I was able to go visit him yesterday. Actually that's not the only plus, the other one is the awesome medical team that is caring for her. U of M Hospital was one of the only hospitals around that can perform the procedure she needed.
Both my Mom and Kevin are doing ok. Hopefully Mom will be released in the next 5 days, she's moving out of the Thoracic ICU this afternoon, to a step-down room. She went through quite an ordeal, even though it was all non-invasive, the three procedures took 7 hours...for an 85 yr. old lady, that's a long time. But she's sitting up now and making progress.
Kevin is too....his blood counts are rising and I'm not sure of the technical terms, but the transplant graft is doing what it needs to be doing now. It's possible he will be released to stay close-by the hospital (not more than an hour away) in the next week, and have to visit daily for check-ups for awhile, then tapering off the number of days a week.
Things are definitely looking up and I ask for your continued prayers for us all....Thank you!

A big thank you to Charlie for taking over my duties during this very trying time....Thanks, Charlie!

Happy to resume the daily role for awhile, Mary. Take all the time you need, but we're definitely looking forward to your return.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 04:12 pm:

Mary, I am so glad to hear that your mom is doing better. She is in very capable hands at the Univ of Mich Hospital--the best in the state! I am very glad that you were able to get her down there in time to get the surgeries done that she needed! Seven hours of anaesthesia is indeed a very long time, particularly for an elderly person!

I'm really happy to hear that Keven's blood counts are rising--that's wonderful news!

My prayers are with your mom, Kevin, you & your family in this difficult time, for their full recoveries!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 04:19 pm:

Mikie, I am really sorry to hear about your collapsed lung. I did not realize you had broken ribs. Broken ribs can be very painful by themselves (I know, as I've had one), without adding a collapsed lung!

My thoughts and prayers are with both you & Precious for your speedy and full recoveries! Hang in there--I suspect that you will have good days and some not so great days during your recoveries, but you will make it! Take care! :-)

We're having a little thunderstorm here in mid-Michigan now.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 07:03 pm:

Mary, I am so happy about your mom AND Kevin! What great news for a family who has suffered through as many hardships as you guys have had to.

Thanks, Pennie! I was wondering how many days it was. LOL

By s. dearing (Geebeed) on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 08:31 pm:

Mary, I'm very happy to hear about your mother and Kevin. I'll remember you all in prayer.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 10:00 pm:

Mary & Mikie, I'm so glad to hear that things are looking up for both of you. All of us certainly have been thinking of you & your loved ones. The powers of prayers & love can work magic.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Monday, June 4, 2007 - 10:08 pm:

Mary, so glad to hear about both Kevin and your mom doing better. She is definately in good hands there.

We were so impressed with the people that work there. A few friends from our church had come down to visit the day my husband went back in for his second surgery. They said what I had been thinking. "We've never seen such caring, compassionate doctors". And we felt that way about almost everyone involved in his care.

Mikie, so glad you are back home and happy to hear that your wife is feeling much better.

By Betty Paull Colborn,AZ (Betty) on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 - 01:56 am:

Mikie, so sorry to hear of the lung problem and the ribs. Neither of them are 'fun' to deal with. Still thinking and praying for you both.
