The next couple of weeks are going to be huge here in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. Besides hosting Pasty Fest June 29 - July 1 and the big Firefighters Tournament here next weekend, there is also a notable milestone being celebrated in Houghton-Hancock June 30 - July 2. For half a century the world has been fascinated by a small flying saucer - originally called the "Pluto Platter" - which today we all know as the Frisbee. Right up the road in Eagle Harbor back in the late 50's, the Healy Brothers developed an extreme sport which they went on to dominate in tournament competition in the 60's. Guts Frisbee celebrates 50 years as the Copper Country welcomes visitors from around the world next weekend for the International Frisbee Tournament.

Our thanks to Brian Rendel, who captured this dramatic moment in the 1980 competition - and another memorable Shoebox Memory.

Have a good week :o)

Is there a Frisbee in the picture?

As a child, I remember the big hoop de doo at the baseball park in Eagle Harbor when the folks had their tournaments. It was very entertaining.
Congratulations on 50 years!

I agree Margaret! It was more "interesting to watch Basketball back then. I think the shorts(????)they wear now are ridiculous.

What a pleasant surprise to see my good friends that I went to school with and hung out with for years. From left to right are David Wyble, Scott Stewart, Ron Arvo and Alan Pyhtila. We all graduated in 1977 and 1978 from Houghton High. My family and I are making the long drive from AZ to Houghton starting this Friday. Looks like we will miss the Pasty Fest and the Frisbee event but we won't miss the big celebration in South Range on the Fourth.
