This week has been ideal for discovering the extreme north/east of the Keweenaw Peninsula. One forecast I heard actually called for snow in some areas of the U.P. overnight, and there were frost warnings everywhere. Must be rough on the black flies, because they have been staying away in droves, giving late-Spring hikers the most comfortable conditions.
If we all had time today, we could trek to this spot where Robert Goniea shot his wife Kathalina (friendly fire with a camera lens, of course). There was another kind of shot just a few feet from here - a space shot - back in January of '71. It is a favorite destination of both rocket buffs and lighthouse lovers, as you can see Gull Rock in the distance.
