A few Junes ago Larry Furgason chronicled his renowned "Retirement Dream" trip, which took him to many exotic places, including the spot we flew over yesterday on the Pasty Cam. If you've been to the Harbor Haus when the Queen is returning from the Island, perhaps you've seen the waitstaff scurry out back to do their famous can-can to welcome the crew and passengers back to Copper Harbor.

By the way, the link to Larry's Guest Gallery album in the paragraph above is the first to the long-awaited new format. For an entertaining tour by motorcycle, click the "View Slideshow" link and select the size and pace you prefer. While we are getting all the links in place to the new format, to jump directly to any Guest Gallery album click here.

I've always enjoyed watching the waitstaff do this - it's so unique!

How cool is that? Traditional dress with sneakers!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 - 07:15 am:

I knew they did that, but have never seen it.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 - 07:27 am:

I've never seen them do this anyway. Maybe one of these years.

Harbor Haus Team Spirit!

I'll have the Planked Whitefish please!

The food at the Harbor Haus is so good that I (and my husband) get most excited about their vegetables! I don't know what they put on them, but I could eat a plate of just the veggies.

By Anna Roehrich (Updreamer) on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 - 09:40 am:

Been there, seen that. And, yes, it is very original and a lot of fun to watch. I can't wait to go back!

Marsha - I have to agree with you on their vegetables...I always like vegetables, but whatever they do to them at the Harbor Haus makes them absolutely fantastic. My favorite Harbor Haus meal, however, is not dinner, but breakfast. Their strawberry crepes were the highlight of my last trip to Copper Harbor.

It's hard to decide what to order to eat at Harbor Haus. Everything is s-o-o-o good! We always make it a point to eat there whenever we visit Copper Harbor.

Yes, it is difficult to decide what to eat...I usually get the rotini pasta, I highly recommend it! Eating here will be one of the highlights of my summer vaca in the UP:)(The gal on the left in this pic is my sister "Loey")

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 - 01:58 pm:

I love the food at Harbor Haus! It's a great place to eat! I hope we get a chance to eat there when we are UP there the end of the month! Since my whole family loves it, that might make it easier to get there!

It's not easy to get everything done that I would like to in 2-1/2 days that we will have while we are up there in the UP the end of the month! If the weather is good, my MTU son wants to go water skiing on Portage. I have a couple of places that I want to go, not to mention my favorite waterfalls & lighthouses & McClain State Park & my list goes on & on. And I'm sure the others have places they would like to go, too. The time is too short & there's sooo much to do!

My family's favorite: bar none. My kids are funny, brilliant, even perfect...my husband charming and attentive, heck I even feel young, thin and athletic...It is a magic spot.

My favorite was when we celebrated our 20th anniversary by ordering ALL the Appetizers and the hot Raspberry dessert! Skipping everything in between! But I could tell hours of cherished memories made in that wonderful place.

Isn't the Harbor Haus for sale? I thought I saw an ad for the northern- most restaurant in Michigan being on sale; wouldn't that be it?

By Karen Wagner (Norman333) on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 - 06:52 pm:

I read that it was for sale also, and I hope it sells to someone who will carry on it's great tradition of hospitality and fine food. 32 years ago, my 6'4" blond hubby and I went there on our Honeymoon and the host greeting me with "Where did you get that great big Viking?" He poured us a glass of wine and invited us in as we mentioned we were just married. We have returned almost every year since to the same welcome and great meal.

And the Chef due to his German cooking experience in Germany does anything German very German. Try the Kassler Ripchen pan fried. I have to admit (being a Kraut from the US) and having eaten in some of the finer German establishments "es war wunderbar!!"

The Copper Harbor marinated hickory smoked trout is tops. I always want to try something new there but the memory of the trout stops me cold.

Dating myself here, but back in the early 80's not only did the servers dance the can-can, but a number of us were commissioned to dive in as a greeting to the returning Isle Royal Queen. :) It was always a fun time on a hot summer night employed in the Harbor. I hadn't thought of that for many years--
