You can see the old mining company payroll office between the buses, in this shot of the day from 8 years ago. This building also served for many years as the State Police post. There actually was a time when Pasty Central considered moving into this building for its new kitchen, before the the opportunity came along to re-open The Hut Inn (just a mile up the road from this spot).

Speaking of the Hut, Steve Jones returns this evening to provide his unique musical stylings while you enjoy dinner. You might want to call ahead for reservations, 337-1133.

Good Morning all. And a Glorious Weekend it shall be. I will have to dream, once again, that I am laying on the beach and watching the kids play in the waters of Lake Superior on a Holiday. Some of the best times have been in the late afternoon shadows of the pine trees lining the wide beaches along the U.P.

Howdy, Everyone, from rainy mid-Michigan. It's been raining here for a few hours now. The good news, is that it looks like the rain is slacking off for now, so we will be able to get out to run errands, etc, before the rain comes back late this afternoon. :-)

Congratulations on your Early Bird, Pweed!

I couldn't resist posting this--sorry--after yesterday's cool seagull pictures on Pasty Cam:
"SURF CITY, New Jersey (AP) -- Welcome to the Jersey Shore! Have a great time, but please don't dig too deeply in the sand in Surf City (you could get blown up), feed the seagulls in Ocean City (you could catch a disease), or draw dirty pictures in the sand in Belmar (it's rude)." CNN.com

I don't think we have to worry too much about the first or the last ones above, in the UP. I'm not so sure about the middle one, though.

Helen, I believe you were talking about your friend downstate who calls them garbage gulls or something to that effect. We see tons of seagulls here in mid-Michigan, a good 25 miles inland. They are busy going through the dumpsters of McDonalds & other fast food places, and grocery stores, among other things. Sadly, they are garbage gulls here. :-(

Dumpster ducks!!!! We are in the farming country,15-20 miles from the nearest lake. Let a farmer start working his field and within 15 minutes there will be 100-200 seagulls in that field, grabbing the grubs and worms that are turned up. How do they find the area so quickly????? GPS? Wireless? Onstar? I give up!

Hi everybody! I'm a little late today but still wanted to say "HI" to you.

It's a 3 day weekend and I actually didn't have to work Saturday. The weather turned out nicer than it was supposed to and hopefully will continue to do so for the remainder of the holiday.
