Eight years ago construction was underway on the old power house, which in a few years would become the Smart Zone.

The above picture has nice composition! Maija, thanks for your note yesterday. Of course I remember you from the first Pasty Fest! It's not like I had to remember the names of hordes of people! Is there a Pasty Fest planned for this year?

Good morning to all :-)

Well, after an afternoon/evening of hail and torrential rain, we faired alright. There were tornadoes northeast of us, but nothing our way even though the sky did turn a nasty shade of green during our hailstorm. The weekend here is supposed to be rain-free, but I think I'll have to grow gills to go outside; 90° and high humidity both days...... yuk!!

At least the countdown is on; down to 84 days now!!

Too quiet in "WhatsUP" today.... must be everyone out enjoying the weather, or something.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, May 4, 2007 - 07:29 pm:

It has been quiet on this list for the last couple of weeks or so. Maybe it is the spring weather, so people are finally able to go outside for a bit!

My son is home for a week, before he goes back to Copper Country for the summer. I hope that we can find a time between our schedule here with our two younger sons, and his schedule up there, etc, so that we can at least get up there for a few days. He wants us to bring our boat up, but it is a smaller boat, so we need to find an inland lake somewhat near Houghton that he can waterski on. Does anyone have any ideas or where I might find info on that? Many thanks in advance!

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Friday, May 4, 2007 - 10:35 pm:

Marianne, Try Torch Lake on the way to Lake Linden, or have him go to Lac La Belle, they have the resort their, gas, food and if it's calm enough he can even get out to the big lake from there. Lake Medora is nice lake too, off US41 approx. 5 miles from Copper Harbor. I've been on all 3 and learned to ski on them as well.

Good Luck

Uncle Chuck if I remember right there was a article in the Daily Mining Gazette and the Lac La Belle Lodge will no longer have food. I think it said that the bar/restaurant are closed indefinetely.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, May 5, 2007 - 11:13 am:

Thank you, Uncle Chuck; it is a gorgeous lake. I would like to try to launch our boat there, if it has a good ramp and the water is deep enough near the ramp. That would be fun! Do you have any idea what the water temps would be at the various places towards the end of June? My oldest son would ski, regardless. But, my youngest son is just learning to ski, so he spends more time in the water, and he gets cold easily.

Do you have to have a federal boat permit or something to be on the Portage, since it is a navigable waterway? We have never had our boat on one, but I thought I remembered you did?

Steve H, I think I saw that article in the Mining Gazette, but I was thinking that it was just the bar that was closing? I thought there was a restaurant, too? I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention, and I have not been there before. The ability to get gas would be a plus. :-)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, May 5, 2007 - 11:13 am:

Sorry--I was referring to Lake Medora. :-)
