By contrast eight years ago all of the ice along Superior's shore was gone. This year their are still some stretches of "glaciers" which may last until June, due the the heavy showfall in April.

Welcome to a new month.

First Post

By Kniton2 (Kniton2) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 06:23 am:

Good Morning! In honor of the "Early Bird", I've tallied all of the gracious award winners for the first third of 2007. Here's the totals so far:
Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) 38, Smfwixom (Trollperson)24, Richard Johnson (Dick fl) 6, Marianne Y (Marianne) 4, Capt Paul (Eclogite)3, P Weed (P Weed) 3, Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll)3, BJ Milford (BJ Milford) 2, Chuck K (chuckclarkston)2, Dennis Kemper (Denkem)2, Grace M Wetton (gmw)2, JH (Thumbgardener)2, Joe (jhurl)2, John Mich (Johnofmi)2, Michael Du Long (Mikie)2, Steve Haagen (radsrh)2

There are at least an equal number of posters with one Early Bird...to save bytes I thought I'd only post those with two awards so far this year.

There were 120 calendar days ending April 30.

More to come September 1!

Good Morning, Everyone, from rainy mid-Michigan!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 07:32 am:

Good morning all! Happy May Day!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 08:14 am:

May Day, indeed. Tomorrow is the day on which the Civil Service Commission decides the fate of us NERE (non-exclusively represented employees). They will decide tomorrow how many lay-off days we will be forced to take. Apparently, we could be looking at from 4 to 20 lay-off days before the end of the state's fiscal year (Sept 30). There are many interesting things you can do with a box of macaroni and cheese.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 08:16 am:

That's right, it is May Day, Deb! Happy May Day!

I remember when I was a young school girl, some of us picked flowers, usually irises or something, from our gardens (that was in California then, so we had flowers on May Day) and made little bouquets. We then put a bouquet on the doorstep of the neighbors' homes (whom we liked) & rang their doorbell, and then we ran & hid. We also danced around maypoles in elementary school. :-) Do they even do that stuff anymore?

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 08:23 am:

We made a May Basket for our school principal when I was in high school back in the mid-70s, but I don't know if or what they do these days.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 08:27 am:

I'm sorry to hear that, Cindy. At least yours is essentially a temporary pay cut. It's always hard to "tighten belts", but at least you will still have a job. When my husband and I first got married, we were both in college, so we had nothing to live on. We had lots of tuna fish or ground meat this & that & everything else.

They are laying off teachers in most of the school districts all around us (including ours) because of the cuts in per pupil funding, per executive order. And, they are laying off a lot more than teachers, and not just temporarily. It's to the point that it is really going to hurt the kids, in terms of classes offered (there will not be as big a selection), etc. They had already cut out classes, so they are down to bare bones.

The economy here in Michigan is the worst in the nation, in a large part because way too much was dependent or interdependent on just one industry. Steps should have been taken to diversify, so the whole state would not have to suffer in the event of a downturn.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 08:32 am:

Kniton2, I didn't know I was in the lead for the early bird award. I've been lazy and slacking though.

It's May Day and it's also our anniversary. We picked a good day, eh?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 08:43 am:

Happy Anniversary, Mr & Mrs Deb!

By s. dearing (Geebeed) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 09:13 am:

Good morning to all from breezy (and later today, stormy), Indiana.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 09:16 am:

Happy Anniversary Mr & Mrs Deb! I hope you have something fun planned.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 09:23 am:

Well, we had planned to go out to dinner last weekend, but our 8 year old granddaughter decided she wanted to come out and go shopping with grandma and grandpa so that put an end to that. We ate at Culver's. Not my idea of a nice anniversary dinner. But she's a joy so that's okay.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 09:24 am:

Thanks, Marianne! Sorry, I didn't see your post.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 09:25 am:

I didn't know that anyone was "keeping tabs" on the Early Birds, but I knew that Mr & Mrs Deb must be at the top of the list. From Kniton2's list, it appears like there are the "Big 2", the Debs & Trollperson, since the rest of us were way back in the pack, in the lower single digits. :-) Congrats to the Debs & Trollperson!

Happy Anniversary Mr.& Mrs. Deb and aren't grandkids the greatest.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 09:46 am:

Your not alone Deb, our first anniversary dinner was at Pizza Hut in Houghton!! Then for the next 3 years we were apart for our anniversary (usually at opposite ends of the continent) before finally having our first nice anniversary dinner together at a private steakhouse here in Houston.

Since #6 for us is coming soon (May 14), we're planning on going out into the Hill Country to a winery/restaurant, barring any unforseen weirdness that may occur....

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 10:52 am:

Congratulation Deb and Ron on both of your accomplishments. Precious and I spent our first anniversary together in Switzerland forty years ago in Sept. Kniton 2 you must have a lot of spare time, I wish I could keep numbers in my mind like you do. My son and family left for Florida to attend a wedding this morning and now I have their Lab. Guiness staying with me. Guess I will be repairing the grass for the rest of the summer. Jimmie the fat white cat is sitting on his chair next to my desk glaring at the inteloper and daring him to enter the office, while Guiness just lays in the doorway watching me work. I am not trying to insult Kniton 2 just a little jealous of people who can keep up with this type of math, the nuns in Hubbell didn't succeed in teaching me. Thank goodness for calculators.

By Susan L. LeBlanc (Foghorn) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 11:19 am:

Spring has sprung in the Copper Country!! My sympathy for those out of work. But,,, too much pork for the NEA Union to be supported by our tax dollars. What ever happened to the 3 R's? Car companies pay more in benefits for retirees than they can handle and thus cannot compete. No foresight and down the road we pay. I guess it is adjustment time.

By Kniton2 (Kniton2) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 12:08 pm:

Prologue...Being an engineer I am fascinated with numbers and trends in addition to being a daily pasty.com reader. With the Pistons and Wings in playoffs as well as the Tigers' season in swing it was easy to page through all of the 2007 "What's UP" postings while watching games to compile data! Hasn't ANYONE ELSE wondered about the Early Bird segmentation?

Now to start on 2006...

KIDDING!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 12:23 pm:

Cap'n Paul...if I was still married, my anniversary would also be May 14. It would have been 30 years on the 14th. Oh, well, water under the bridge...I hope you have a lovely anniversary.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 01:07 pm:

Happy Anniversary Deb & Mr Deb. Hello everyone else!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 03:25 pm:

Happy anniversary Deb and Mr. Deb! Wow, I made it on the list, right up there with Mikie. What and honor.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 04:41 pm:

Thanks everyone!!! It should be a wild night here, popcorn and TV........Whoo Hoo!!! Am. Idol first, then the hockey playoffs, it just don't get much better than that. Well, the hockey games anyway.
Mr. Deb

Hauska vappu, cousin Jarmo! Haven't had a Vappu dance for a couple three years now. :o( Had a really nice day Sunday in Covington to celebrate SUOMI KUTSUU's 45th anniversary. Think of that, 45 years! Holy Wah!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 - 08:18 am:

Wow! I used to watch Soumi Kutsuu (Finland Calling) when I was a kid. Of course, I didn't understand any of it, but my dad did. I always enjoyed the singing. The host was Carl Pellanpaa (sp?).

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 - 08:47 am:

Beverly, I am going to have heart palpitations! How could you!

By Danbury (Danbury) on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 - 10:44 am:

Sharks: teeth. Wings of any kind: fodder. Yum! :D
