First glance at this shot from Aladino Mandoli, you think, 'white beach sand on a sunny summer day'. But in reality, the only word that is truly describing these first two photos, is "sunny". These were taken just last week, as a few NMU (Northern Michigan University) students were doing some wind surfing on the ice pack in Marquette Harbor, near Presque Isle. Must have been just a little chilly out there in shorts and bare feet, although a few of the smarter ones have their water shoes on at least! Speaking of ice packs, E. Neil Harri spotted this ice pack on Friday, flying over Keweenaw Bay. In case you aren't familiar with the area, that would be the town of Baraga on the left and L'Anse on the right in the third photo. A few weeks back we had a discussion going about Pequaming, which you can also see on the right, jutting out into Lake Superior.

Good Morning, Looks like it may be awhile before all the Ice is gone. Always like Neil's Pics.

Those kids look like they're having fun. They must have a special type of blood to be able to sit on the ice like that and watch.
Things always look so different from the air. I've driven around that bay many times and I never realized how small it is. I guess I am always feeling lucky just to be there and not worrying about the size of things.

Well, what do you expect..... they're NMU students!! :P

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 07:24 am:

I fell for the bait, too! [It didn't hurt, though, that I did not have my glasses on, either, so I could not see much detail. LOL] Crazy college kids!

Too cold for me! Oh to be young and (what's the word again? {is it stupid?} again?????

Yes, NMU students always have the spirit of adventure, and it won't be too long until they're are taking to the cliffs at Presque Isle and diving into lake superior! Look at it this way, it's alot more fun then building snow statues!

Ice on May 1? Brrr! I might not have believed it, but this last
weekend my wife and I went up to see the hawk migration at
Whitefish Point. The hawks (and other birds like loons and
sandhill cranes) were amazing to see in such abundance. As for
the weather, again, brrr! We wore our winter coats and were
glad we did. Seeing remnants of snow along M123 from N
ewberry to Paradise prepared us for the cold too. Spring takes
its time unfolding in the U.P., doesn't it?

Hey, Uncle Chuck - building snow statues is fun. Very cold but fun. Wind surfing on the ice pack looks fun too. Great photos.

Mumu died in April 1989 and there was no snow or ice when we were at the funeral in Hancock, it was 70 deg and we were out on the porch enjoying the sunshine afterwards. Shows you never know. They look like they are having fun, and of course I love Neils pictures.

Ice in May - not unusual. Try ice in June - 1996? there were icebergs floating around Munising.
