Eight years ago the remnants of the old school in Houghton were being hauled away. A radical change to the landscape.

Well, I thought I was an early bird today, but I guess others were
there first. Good morning.

By Lowell La Fave (Lowell) on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 05:07 am:

Warm down here in East Central MO. 52 and supposed to be around 75 today with possible rain. Sure beats being in the 30's with the lows around 25 to 21

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 07:41 am:

Holy smokes! On any other given day Kosk would have been the early bird. You guys give new meaning to "Early Bird".

Good morning.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 08:25 am:

All that talking about A&W yesterday made me hungry for a coney, We have an old one around the corner here in dexter that opened already this year. They still walk to your car when you pull in to take your order. i am heading there for lunch.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 12:01 pm:

John enjoy the fleeting admiration you will recieve today, for fame doesn't last long. Unfortunaty I have been the posseser of the award on several occaisions and the next day you are forgotten.

Anybody that's awake at 4:16am (3:16am here) in the morning deserves the Early Bird and all the fame that goes along with it.....

By john mich (Johnofmi) on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 05:57 pm:

Actually, I am up all night and I sometimes view Pasty Cam before I go to bed. I just finished my breakfast at 5pm. I don't know how my hours got so messed up. Probably has something to do with working in a bar until closing in a past life.
Just remember, no matter how early the "early bird" person may be there is always one earlier; Charlie or Mary.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 08:07 pm:

Capt.Paul,I have a question I think you or Dr.Nat will probably know the answer to. We found a beautiful spot on Lake Superior near Munising and have been told fresh water is not available there. If you dig a well, sooner or later, you will hit salt water. Is the land around that area over an ancient ocean bed?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 08:52 pm:

It is true Erica; at some places in the UP if you dig a well deep enough you will hit a salty, briny water table. Here is how it happened....

In the Early Paleozoic, this part of the continent was under an ocean. Over time this ocean dried up but some of that water percolated through the rock and collected in pockets that later became trapped by impermeable sediments/rocks etc... There is a spring near Mass City where the water coming out is very briny and impossible to drink; I'm sure the same thing would happen if there were a spring at your beautiful spot. In your case, if you were to drill a well there, you would probably break into one of those brine pockets the people told you about.

Some of the remnants of that ocean can still be seen today if you go to Limestone Mountain near Pelkie. Another interesting fact about the briny water left by that ocean is that it was reported miners at Quincy would sometimes break into pockets of salty water while drilling and blasting underground. I have also seen halite (salt) crystals recovered from Quincy as well, most likely from that same briny water.

I'm rather surprised to see no comments on the picture of eight years ago of the Houghton High School building being torn down. Spent all my school days in that building. Took one last walk thru it at the time when students and teachers could visit the building before demolition. Sad day it was.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 10:10 pm:

Grace--Oddly enough, I still see HHS still standing proud in my
mind's eye. I imagine that must have been a very sad day for you.
My father is still attached to L'Anse HS and my mother frequently
spoke fondly of Painesdale HS, her alma mater.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 10:29 pm:

Why did they tear it down? It was a nice building. Now it looks odd there to just have that big empty spot.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 - 12:33 am:

We lived in Houghton when I was in the 5th grade. Went to the HHS. Two classmates I remember, Hugh Makins and Gretchen Gundlach. That was back in '49, I think. We moved to Hubbell so I went to the LLHS for the 6th to 9th grades.
