Today Edie and I will drive past this spot where Bishop Baraga looked out over Keweenaw Bay eight years ago on the Pasty Cam. We spent the night in Marquette, on the way back from downstate. By the way, happy anniversary to WHWL in Marquette which signed on the air 31 years ago today.

I love this site. Fr. Baraga probably does too.

From what I've heard and read, he surely did. And so do I.

One of my favorite stretches of road is 41 from Marquette, and heck all the way up. Good Morning!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 08:51 am:

Congrats Pennie, This young lady is nice enough to an old man to walk with him and make sure he does his exercises. I have to use a walker and she slowed down to keep the same pace as me. Can't brag enough about this young lady, she is an excelent mother, wife, and buddy.

A very good Monday morning from central Indiana!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 09:21 am:

Mikie, What a nice thing to say about our little Pennie! Be careful though, wouldn't want too much to go to her head. LOL

By John W (Jwahtola) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 09:22 am:

Sunshine and a stiff breeze here in Hillsdale county. Had a beautiful weekend. We love stopping to see Bishop Baraga when we get the chance to go north.

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 10:14 am:

((((((((((((((Mikie)))))))))))))) awww thank you. You made my eyes tear up. I love ya baby! I am more then happy to walk with you anytime you want.

Some people have made real friends from visiting this site. Have a great day.
It's nice to see the big, beautiful Bishop Baraga statue when traveling on the highway. Pretty soon the trees will be in full bloom & you won't be able to see it unless you go to the actual site where it is. I think they should cut a couple of the trees down around it so those traveling on US41 can see it all year round. Just my opinion.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 11:02 am:

I knew right where that was the minute I saw it. I remember as a kid we would drive to the A&W Root Beer stand in L'Anse that was just before that bend in the road. It was a big event to drive there from the end of the East Branch Road in Mass. Every time I taste root beer it reminds me of those trips.

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 11:33 am:

I remember many trips to the A & W also, but it was mostly to the one in Ripley. Me and my great unkie in his old blue international scout. Boy, those frosted mugs of rootbeer were sure good, huh? Especially with the company I had back then. My great unkie was something else, and always kept me entertained.

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 11:36 am:

The Rootbeer stand is still there. It usually opens in this month of April.
A good place to get a burger and anything else to go with it!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 12:31 pm:

The old one we used to go to is closed. It's the little one you see at the bend before Bishop Baraga. We did go to the new one in town as well. We had an old red International Scout back in those days, but we drove the Galaxy 500 or the station wagon to the root beer stand.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 02:15 pm:

Yikes! The rumor around here, State government that is, is that they will shut down the government for a whole month. That means lay us all off for an entire month. I'm not sure how I will pay the rent and the bills. I hope they've thought of the trickle down affect this will have on the local ecomony. If none of us have money, we won't be buying things like food and gas and meals out and clothes. That means that folks won't be able to renew licenses and plates either. When I started in state government 30 years ago, it was the best, safest place to work. Not so anymore.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 03:18 pm:

Up around the bend headed south, means, one of the best sweet rolls ever made, just on your left, at the Hill Top, great meals as well!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 03:30 pm:

Yes, I've had the super, monster size sweet rolls. Yummmmm....I want one right now, with lots of frosting.

By FJL (Langoman) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 04:57 pm:

Maybe the State of Mich. is just trying to save the Taxpayers some money.....

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 04:59 pm:

Mikie I will slip you your $20.00 later...

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 11:14 pm:

Lorelei, I was so sorry to see the Ripley A & W close down. It was a staple, wasn't it? And how 'bout those root beer floats? Mmmm Hmmmm!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 08:50 am:

Edie and I had dinner last night at the Hilltop in L'Anse. Great as always. Their website www.sweetroll.com was one of the first to be hosted by Pasty Central/Pasty.NET, and - along with dozens of other sponsors - they have enabled the Pasty Cam to continue all these years.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 09:15 am:

Well, if they lay us all off for a whole month, I, as a taxpayer, won't have money to pay MY taxes or my bills or my rent or buy groceries or gas...

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 09:21 am:

Cindy I hope they don't go through with the closing down of the State. Maybe they should just have a volunteer Senate, and House. Or maybe they could become part time representatives.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 - 06:42 am:

Hi Cotton,
Thanks for piping in about the trees hiding the statue of Bishop Baraga. I am surprised that no one or nothing is done about keeping the lakeshore and monuments free of some trees and shrubs that block the view, so people can see them even from a little distance when they are near the Lake.

I know that the home owners and people who have cottages like their privacy, but at the same time the economy in the UP depends on the tourist trade. Without it, it become pretty depressing. So why not make it a little nicer by the lake by cutting down a few more tree so they can see it? So, Cheryl, it's not just your opinion, it's also mine.

And it is very interesting how this site has drawn people together into some wonderful friendships. I think if you read this site regularly you can pretty much pick them out and put them together.
