Did you know, here's where this web project was born in 1995? The World Wide Web officially began in September of '94 (the Internet had been around for a while, but www.anything was unheard of). A few months into the life of this new medium, we began publishing regular updates of the Snow Thermometer, some of the first web pages devoted to news and views from the U.P.

Good morning Charlie. Have a great Thursday.
First Post

By Joe (Jhurl) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 06:30 am:

Hello Charlie

I remember the first page and there was a model of the snow thermometer that i believe was given out as a prize and or could be purchased. QUESTION !! is that still available some where on the net. I searched the net and found the earlier pages but the link to the purchase site was broken or unavailable.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 06:43 am:

Good Morning, you all!

By Sunrise Side MI (Ilovelucy2) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 06:55 am:

Beautiful Sunrise on the Sunrise Side this morn. Have a great day...Spring is finally on the way!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 07:41 am:

Good morning!

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 07:54 am:

Joe,

Tony at Copper World in Calumet sells the snow thermometer models for like 8 or 9 dollars.

They make great stocking stuffers, sure to start a conversation with folks from the lower 48.

By Carole (Carole) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 08:16 am:

Geroge Hite has a friend that makes the snow thermometer and used to give a few away for the snow contest that he has every year.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 08:28 am:

Good Morning, my cousins who grew up in florida were shocked the first time they saw the snow thermometer. Now they have their kids up there every summer to hang out with Papa.

By s. dearing (Geebeed) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 09:03 am:

Wishing everyone a Good Morning from rainy, central Indiana.

By Charles In Esky (Charlesinesky) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 09:05 am:

I get the Morenci Observer. Morenci is exactly on the state line
and is therefore Michigan's southernmost city. This week their
editor called up their weather guy, George Isobar, to get this
year's snow totals for the year. George said he measured 23.7
inches this last season. Can you imagine what kind of sign
thermometer Morenci would have -- if it had one. I think a
regular yardstick would do it!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 09:08 am:

Wouldn't be much of an eye catcher on the side of the road.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 09:13 am:

Isobar! That can't be his real name.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 10:02 am:

That cracked me up, too! It's only funny if it's his real name, though. Makes me think of the guy who used to do the bear research in Michigan, Terry deBruin.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 10:19 am:

I have a cousin who was a biology teacher and, no lie, his last name is Bugg.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 10:24 am:

I have a daughter named Danielle Ozanich who is a teacher, nothing funny about that I just like to brag about her. Doting father you know.

By s. dearing (Geebeed) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 10:29 am:

My husband and I had wondered for a long time what the lower level of the bridge was used for. Found out the very informative reason from this website.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 10:33 am:

There is a Dr. Atchoo in southeast Michigan.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 10:47 am:

Is Dr. Atchoo an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor? That would be too funny.

By Bob Jewell, Farmington Hills (Rjewell) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 10:51 am:

Joe,
I purchased a snow stick a year ago from the man that makes them. Here is the info from George Hite's Eagle river website.
The Keweenaw Snow Gauge
A Must For Keweenaw Snow Aficionados!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be Prepared For Winter. Track Snowfall On Your Own Replica of Keweenaw's World Famous "Snow Thermometer".

This replica of Keweenaw's icon, the 32 foot high "Snow Thermometer" the County Road Commission maintains alongside Highway 41 has been a "best seller" since its introduction in 1999.

It's 14" high, looks like the real thing, and has a moveable arrow. No Keweenaw snow aficionado or should be without one. A sure conversation starter for folks you have a hard time visualizing the tremendous snowfalls that are the Keweenaw norm. A great gift for friends or family, or anyone with a Copper Country connection. Made by Bruce Olson of Cat Harbor.

Bruce will priority mail you one, or more, if you send your order, and your mailing address to , Bruce Olson, 7477 M-26, Eagle Harbor, MI 49950. Include payment of $10 for each "Snow Stick" plus $4 for postage (for up to three). Check should be made payable to Bruce Olson. They are also available at Copper World in Calumet

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 11:35 am:

When Dr. Atchoo goes to lunch does he leave a note on his door that says, "Right back, Atchoo"? I bet you wish you'd said that, Rowdy!

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 12:42 pm:

Marsha, great comeback :)

I used to have a dentist named Dr. Tingle.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 01:02 pm:

Marsha, I shared one with Charlie. Awaiting approval. I had a knee operated on by Dr. Ty Cobb though.

By Martha Kirk (Misschiefie) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 09:24 pm:

For a while I worked as a newspaper indexer and we kept a "funny names" list. We came across several lawyers whose name was Swindle, and, of course, there was the Philippine church official whose name was Cardinal Sin, but my favorite was a local man (Charlie, you may remember him), a sergeant in the Washtenaw County Sheriff's motorcycle division named Harley Rider.

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Thursday, April 19, 2007 - 11:37 pm:

When I was young we had a family Dentist by the name of Dr Pliers

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 12:12 am:

There is a Chiropractor down here in New Baltimore named Dr. Bend! I've been to him. Good man!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 07:49 am:

there's an insurance agency near me named Angst. Have to wonder if they did that on purpose.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 08:40 am:

I have heard of The Officer named Harley, I think he is a relative of a friend of mine.

By BJmilford (Bjmilford) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 08:39 pm:

A proctologist at our hospital is Dr Tootla.
