Back in '99 it was freezing rain on the morning of April 5. The Pasty Cam was still mainly a father and son project at that point, and Jonathan continued to develop his camera skills, while I was still learning the jobs of a webmaster. Soon Dan Urbanski would become aware of our daily feature, and add his magic touch to shots of the day.

Your late visit from father winter should be more welcome than freezing rain!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, April 5, 2007 - 08:52 am:

Good Morning, my son asked my why it was snowing since its April. All I could say is "Its Michigan, honey"

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, April 5, 2007 - 08:55 am:

We have the cold temps, the high N.W. winds and low wind chills but no snow. I am going to embrace springtime's warm, sunny days all the more when spring weather decides to come back like last week! It will make my motorcycle shopping more fun!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, April 5, 2007 - 08:56 am:

I would take the snow over freezing rain anyday. I read in last night's Mining Gazette online that Houghton got about 8 inches of snow. That's not all that much in the great scheme of things for UP there, I wouldn't think. I suspect it was a heavy, wet snow, though, which would make it difficult to shovel. And, it was apparently enough for a bunch of fender benders & cars in ditches in both Houghton & Hancock.

Kosk, I would think that your bigger problem is in and around Marquette & Ishpeming.

If you change your mind & decide to go, have a safe & good trip.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, April 5, 2007 - 09:05 am:

Speaking of April 5th...back in the mid 1970's, I lived south of Houston, TX, but I was in Midland, MI on business. I almost got snowed into Midland that day because almost all flights had been cancelled, & the car rental agencies would not rent cars (to drive to Detroit) because of the poor road conditions enroute. I'm not sure how, but I got out on the only plane out of town that day, flying 17th in line, standby, on an old North Central (I think it was a DC-3--not a big plane by any stretch of the imagination), because I was already at the airport, & most of the people could not get to the airport. It was a snow day for the kids in the area that day, too. I did make it home, some 10 hours late. I'll always remember that trip, and the fact that you can't count on decent weather in mid-Michiganin early April. :-)

The photo above would make a beautiful Christmas card. I love it.

dlp~What is the snow total so far for Painesdale?

By John W (Jwahtola) on Thursday, April 5, 2007 - 10:40 am:

Your snow is sure pretty but you can keep it. We only had 1/2 inch here in Hillsdale county. 700 miles from your big snow fall. Hard to belive that we can be in the same state and have so different weather out of the same storm but that is Michigan.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, April 5, 2007 - 10:47 am:

We now have a Snow & Blowing Snow Advisory in effect here mid-Michigan now. That comes as a bit of a surprise because I thought we were only supposed to get a dusting of snow. I don't mind the snow nearly as much as the howling winds that we have had here since yesterday morning. We want to go to the big outlet mall that is about an hour from here this weekend looking for school clothes for growing youngest son, but I am not making that drive in high winds, et al. Hopefully, things will calm down soon. Otherwise, we will just have to find something here in town, so we will not be able to get as much.

I do that hope my youngest son will have enough sense to eat lunch in the high school cafeteria today, rather than walk to one of the fast food restaurants, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Teenage boys.....my oldest son did not do that.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, April 5, 2007 - 12:11 pm:

I agree, Brooke--enough already! (In response to your comment on the cam notes page today.)

I did get a chuckle out of my MTU son yesterday, though. He has always told us how much he loves all the snow & cold weather UP there. Yesterday, when he started to complain about the blizzard in April, near Easter, I told him I knew about the Blizzard Warning, but that I thought he loved all of the snow & cold...He didn't know what to say then, so he stopped for a second before reaffirming his love for snow and cold weather. I guess he just wanted me to know there was a blizzard up there. I was teasing him, & he knew it, though. My sons know that I am often cracking jokes or teasing or otherwise making them laugh or smile...

Well now, six foot drifts, 18 to 24 inches of snow, cold temps, high N.W. winds, low wind chills, blizzards, almost Easter!!!! Somebody call the Academy Award winner and tell him its "Global Freezing", not "Global Warming"........

Marianne-- you must have worked for Dow Chem back then. Lake Jackson, TX?????

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, April 5, 2007 - 06:09 pm:

Lorelei & dlp, tonight's Daily Mining Gazette said that Painesdale had a storm total of 38 inches, as of the time the story was written:
http://www.mininggazette.com/stories/articles.asp?articleID=6458

You're welcome Kosk. I think it's probably a good thing that you decided to stay home. The weather for this Easter week has not been very nice at all most places in the US, which is a real bummer for many people. I am sorry that you have to miss the big birthday party and special family gathering, though. :-)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, April 5, 2007 - 06:11 pm:

Yes, Tom, I worked for Dow Chem in Lake Jackson, TX, before we moved to Michigan. And, I worked for Dow here in Michigan for a few years, before I retired and had my three sons.

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Thursday, April 5, 2007 - 06:19 pm:

Thanks Marianne. I know when the plow went by this morning, the snow was well past my waist. Thank goodness for my Dad who blew the snow away.

Now the sun is shining. Go figure.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Thursday, April 5, 2007 - 06:34 pm:

Marianne, Yes Painesdale received 38inches from this system of 6AM. I am the person who wades out to the weather station to measure it and then reports it to the NWS and also to the Daily Mining Gazette. Due to the weather I haven't received a gazette in two days. Guess I will have to call them tomorrow AM.
The good news is the sun is shining as I type, but the temp is cold. Don't anticipate measuring more than a couple of inches tomorrow AM. Our year-to-date snow total in Painesale is 266 inches for the season. We usually get closer to the 300 inch mark, but that's OK.

That is a really nice old film. It surely makes you step back a bit to think about what has changed & what is similar today. Thanks for the link, Tom!

By john mich (Johnofmi) on Friday, April 6, 2007 - 04:59 am:

Yeah, nice old film, thanks for the link.
