The rivers and falls have been busy rushing and gushing lately with the snow melt, as Nate Alwine shows us today. Now when Nate sent these pictures to me and mentioned they were in the Sturgeon Dam area, I automatically thought of the Houghton/Baraga Sturgeon river. That's because I'm from the Keweenaw end of the U.P., but these shots are taken in the Loretto, MI area, east of Iron Mountain on US 2. Sure looks like Nate and Callie were enjoying the roar of the water as it rushes to who knows where. Whenever I sit back and watch a river running so furiously, it always makes me wonder where it's all coming from, where is it going to and why it never seems to run out?

It's fun to see Callie growing up!

By Helen (Heleninhubbel) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 10:35 am:

Now that is what I love to see.....smiling faces, Daddy and his little girl, and having some good memories made.

I love this time of year when the water is running. It acts like it has been held back somewhere and has just escaped.....it is so beautiful and strong.

God Bless that little Callie with wisdom, good health, compassion and a life of true happiness.

God Bless all.....Helen

You too Blue eyes...and your sweetie

It's funny that Callie is on Pasty.com today because she and I were in a little car accident this past weekend, downstate on I-75. No one was hurt, but a man named Art from the Keewenaw was driving by and stopped to help us out. He said his place was by Torch Lake. If anyone knows an Art from the Keewenaw, tell him thanks from the girl who's tire he changed.

You can always count on a yooper to help you out!

Thanks Art!

Ps Happy Birthday to Nate! It's his 30th Birthday!

By Hilarie Alwine (Halwine) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 11:42 am:

Also,

For those of you who don't know this area, There used to be a •••• right about where Nate and Callie are and a lake where the river is running. The project to remove the •••• started about 4 years ago, and they did a wonderful job restoring that area back to it's natural state! When you hike there, you can find all sorts of neat things that fell to the bottom of the lake years ago.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 12:54 pm:

**** do these mean a dam?

By Hilarie Alwine (Halwine) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 01:35 pm:

Oops, I totally meant dam!! How embarrassing.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 04:01 pm:

Unless you're sure you mistyped, there's not necessarily anything embarrassing, Halwine.
Some time back, "Texas" turned to red dots, too, due to by then unnoticed residues of an older hacking incident, if I remember correctly.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 05:06 pm:

Lol, I remember the whole Texas debacle. If I remember, it had something to do with all the Texas Hold'um spam that was going around. Anyways I thought it was funny that Texas was a bad word (personally, it still is in this Yooper house ;-)

I was down in the Sturgeon River dam area 4 years ago for a geologic field trip, and there was talk then about removing the dam. It is truly amazing to look at Nate's pics now with the photos I have when the dam was still there. Looks like the Dr. and I will have to visit this area when we are visiting this summer; I see some fantastic geology....

Nate, Happy 30th birthday and many more. You are my wallpaper for whose knows how long. MHS library is proud of you making it on Pasty Cam. I had Sue Sommer take a look at you and Callie. Her comment was "he looks just like he did when he worked for us". Is there a trip to Mishawaka any time in the near future. If there is, let me know.Callie is getting so big. She certainly looks as if she enjoys hiking with Dad. Hi Hilaire, hope to meet you soon.

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 09:01 pm:

Happy Birthday Nate, I hope you had a grand birthday with your family last weekend!
And of course, Many More!!!!!!!!

Nice looking dog in the lower left corner of the bottom picture too.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 09:15 pm:

Mary, just wondering if this Nate is the same young man we were rooting for back a few years ago when he was in service, like the Army? He sure has turned out to be a great young American we can be proud of. And happy birthday, Nate, from a grandma.

Mary says: Actually Ms. Katie, that was a different Nate, as in Sgt. Nathan Tormala. We haven't heard from him in awhile, maybe his Aunt Joyce could fill us in on where he is and how he's doing?

By April Hughes (Ahughes798) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 11:22 pm:

Beautiful photos. I'm a pasty cam lurker who is envious of those of you who get to live there!

Take care of yourselves...and where you live, too. April

By J.T. Toivola (Joyce) on Monday, April 23, 2007 - 11:46 pm:

Ahhh, the scenery here is much easier on the back than the stuff I've been gawking at!I know I'm not the only one spending every spare moment rearranging the countryside, trying to repair winter's damage.
Sgt. Nathan is in Iraq, northeast of Baqubah in Diyala province,at FOB Normandy. He serves as a medic in the Army. Our son Jeremy is in Baqubah,at FOB Warhorse, serving in the Army as MP gunner. Nathan and Jeremy have met, though not often, when on missions. Needless to say, these reunions are quite a morale booster. Our son Jason (Jeremy's identical twin, also MP gunner) was preparing to return from his tour in Baghdad, when Jeremy arrived in November. They were in the same city for a week, but were unable to meet. Such is life.
Happy birthday,Nathan Alwine! Keep on hiking. Enjoy every minute of every day with Callie, even when she yanks at your hair, ears and eyeballs.
Thanks for the compliment and inquiry about Nathan. We are very proud of our troops!

Joyce--I'm thinking and praying for you and your family members
today.

I love hiking along the rivers of the U.P. every chance I get to head north. The Sturgeon River near L'Anse is one of my favorites. I'm always very impressed by the many logs that are deposited along the riverbanks after the high waters have receded. I have to get up there during April someday!
