Paul Roberts took a road trip to Eagle Harbor in search of whatever he could find and was quite pleased with the results. Paul's first shot is unique, since you can see the top of the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse just peeking out from the surroundings and a freighter sliding between the rocks and the shore, before it slips out of sight. Nice catch! The two for one shot is pretty neat too, with the small fishing boat crossing in front of the huge freighter and the ice covered rocks of the entry point for Eagle Harbor in view too. I like the way the angle of the photo makes the sizes of all three subjects appear larger or smaller than they really are.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 07:59 am:

Wonderful pictures! I'll take pictures of the Eagle Harbor light (or any lighthouse) anytime, and then you add a freighter... Lake Superior looks awesome, totally calm, and the little bit of snow left on the rocks, well I have some pictures of that areaa with that amount of snow on the rocks from 4 years ago.

I guess all I can say is they rock! :-)

I never tire of this veiw. It is from my front yard. A lot of people stop to take photos here all year around.

These pictures are gorgeous any time!

By Kenty (Dashamo) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 08:31 am:

That ship seems a lot closer to shore than you normally see them. Or is it just an optical illusion?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 08:34 am:

Wonderful choice of pics today! We have big barges traveling the Mississippi here, but they are a far cry to the awe of those majestic ore freighters! The only lighthouses here, are the yard ornaments variety, sigh!

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 08:43 am:

A lot of them run in closer this time of year and in the late fall, too. I've seen loaded downbound ones pass closer than upbound ones on occasion - completely outside their shipping lanes. I think it's because there are fewer salties and they feel safer skirting the normal lanes? Anybody with other ideas?

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 08:52 am:

The first shipping lanes are only four miles out. I see them run this close all shipping season if the water is not too rough.Eagle Harbor is about the furtherest North on map so the lanes are closest to shore here. Actually Agate Harbor and Dan's point are a little further North.

I love Eagle Harbor, great view from your front yard Neil.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 09:36 am:

Neil, you're sure fortunate to wake up to such a beautiful view of the lake every morning. Plus the great views that you take in with your camera from your airplane. And thank you for those pics. That first picture should be on a post card. Beautiful!!!!!

By dotti caldwell (Dotti) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 10:01 am:

Wonderful shots! Neil how blessed you are to have this view on your doorstep. I believe the ship is the Presque Isle but can't be sure. Have a great day all.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 10:28 am:

I second Cotton's motion that the first picture should be on a post card; it is fantastic! Thank you, Paul Roberts for your great pictures!

Wow, Neil, I would love to be able to wake up to that awesome view every morning and enjoy it all of the time!

To all-enjoy our great weather today & this weekend! It has been a long time in coming.

I too am suprised on how close the ship looks to shore, it was not one of the views that I got while aboard ships.

Along with your lighthouse/freighter theme of the day.

After 49 years I have received a copy of my discharge papers from 3 different great lakes freighters that I sailed on.

I do have info here on how to obtain these papers free (.39cent stamp) from the Gov't if any of the locals are interested. They would look nice in the den.

At one time I had compiled a list from memory of sailors from LL-H and came up with 57. as usual I can't locate the list now!!!

You couldn't ask for more.....Eagle Harbor, a freighter, and THE lake! Wonderful pictures!

By Anna Roehrich (Updreamer) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 11:39 am:

I love following the link and checking out the album for the photographer of the day. If you want to see some amazing photography, try it. Paul Roberts has quite a number of shots that should be postcards. Great pix, Paul!

By Paul Roberts (Grizzlyadams) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 07:27 pm:

It's my pleasure to supply everyone with photos of this area. All the thanks I need is to hear that people enjoy them.

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 08:39 pm:

Note to Paul Roberts: Are you kidding??? The pics are fabulous!!!

By Scott B. Tomlinson (Kings8th) on Friday, April 20, 2007 - 10:23 pm:

The freighter in the picture is the Presque Isle, one of the 13 thousand-footers on the lakes.
