Hi you all. I just wanted to put in a word to remind everyone to watch for wildlife on the highways & byways. My son went back to Houghton yesterday. He rode back with a friend. About a mile east of the MTU campus on U.S. 41, they went around a blind curve. Five deer were on the highway just around that curve. It was at dusk, about 8 pm. Four of the deer scattered, but the baby didn't move. They hit the baby deer (I've been told that this would be last year's baby, about 70 to 80 pounds) straight-on. The driver managed to keep the car under control the whole time. No one was hurt, and there was only minor damage to the car--not even a broken headlight. I am so thankful that no one was injured, & that the damage to the car was minor!!! I was rather surprised it did not set off the air bags, with a square on hit to the front end. I teased my son, asking him if he was sure they really hit a deer & not a rat, a mouse, or a raccoon. :-)
(A couple of years ago, a car carrying MTU students back to Houghton hit a deer after Thanksgiving. That car was totaled, the kids were hurt, and their belongings were a mess.)
Anyway, please watch for wildlife on the roads, whether deer, elk, moose, or whatever, where ever you are. And if you are going to hit something, unless it's as big as a moose, or something, don't swerve--that's how some accidents get much worse & drivers lose control. Here in mid-Michigan, we have lots of deer (even in town) & apparently some black bears.

Marianne, I had to slow down for 3 deer friday on my way home from walmart myself. Those guys almost time their crossing the road just to mess with the cars. I'm glad your son is OK and no one is hurt.
