Dean Woodbeck (Dwoodbeck) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 06:12 am:

Here we are on St. Urho's Day, being celebrated (?) by these two snowmobilers nine years ago.

As I'm sure you all know, St. Urho (Finland's answer to St. Patrick) drove the grasshoppers out of Finland -- or is the good saint a couple of Americans' toungue-in-cheek answer to St. Patrick? Wikipedia, of course, has a full story.

That doesn't mean you won't find tributes to St. Urho, including a a statue in Menahga, Minnesota. St. Urho's day is celebrated around the country in places like Hood River, Oregon and Butte, Montana. And, of course, he has his own web site, courtesy of Finland, Minnesota.

In Hancock, we don't have a parade for St. Urho, but we do have a St. Patrick's Day parade, celebrating another of the ethnic communities that settled here. With a predicted low of 11 degrees tonight, I'm afraid the band's mouthpieces will freeze to their braces.

St. Patricks Day will be celebrated in the local pubs. One word sufficient: Cheers!

Happy St. Urho's Day today everyone!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 08:20 am:

Good morning! You can tell it's St. Patty's Day and basketball tournament time because it snowed like crazy for a while yesterday. It didn't stick, but it still snowed and cooled things down to about 18 this morning. I am SO happy it is Friday. Have a great day everybody. I hope spring comes soon.

Tomorrow is my day, even though I'm unknowingly wearing purple and green today for St. Urho. I'm not sure if there's some penalty for being Scotch/Irish wearing the colors of a Finnish Patron Saint??

Sadly, I don't think I'll be getting any corned beef and cabbage tomorrow either; the Dr. isn't too fond of the stuff so I'm nice enough not to make her cook it.......

By CJ in MN (Cjfadness) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 11:44 am:

Hi, I'm new to your site as far as posting, but have been following it since 2004 after a trip to the UP in June where my friend and I were almost eaten alive by bugs. (we were camping) We made it as far as Copper Harbor and had planned to visit the whole south side of the lake up to Whitefish Point, but my friend couldn't handle the bugs. So this year I will be embarking on a Circle Tour by myself and can't wait to see the Keweenaw again and spend more time there. I'm actually a North Shore junkie and have been all my life, but am anxious to see the rest of what this beautiful lake has to offer. Haven't been on the Circle Tour since I was a child and the road first opened all the way around the lake, long time ago. Looking forward to seeing it again as an adult.

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 11:48 am:

Oh, oh, Capt Paul---no one caught you on the "to make her cook it" comment.
Sitting here in AZ the UP looks great.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 11:51 am:

I never get it right, I'm wearing red. But its Jean day at work so my morale cancels out all caring because I am comortable. I am also happy its Friday.

By Musicteacher (Musicteacher) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 12:03 pm:

CJ in MN: Be sure to take the tour of the Calumet
Theatre when you visit!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 12:32 pm:

Lol, I know Tom. I'm surprised the Dr. hasn't been on yet to "set me straight"!! ;-)

The Dr. and I will also be on the Circle Tour this summer after spending a few days in the Keweenaw first. We are really looking forward to this trip because we are going to treat it as the honeymoon we never had......

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 03:57 pm:

CJ in MN...My hubby and I are North Shore junkies as well!! It's a bit closer to home for us. The best time was by our Harleys!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 04:28 pm:

Aaaahhhh....that's sweet, Cap'n Paul...that sounds like a really nice honeymoon.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 05:05 pm:

I caught you on it, Capt Paul, & I even told my MTU son (who's home on Spring Break) about it earlier this afternoon, but we've been gone all day, & I have not had a chance to respond until now. :-)

In the old days, we would have called you a male chauvinist... I think they are a little more lax today on that, but still. LOL I'm not a big corned beef & cabbage fan, myself, & I can't stand the smell of it cooking, either, so I appreciate your kindness for Dr Nat.

But, I do love corned beef sandwiches. How about going to one of the delis & getting a corned beef sammich & cole slaw for St Paddy's Day? (I'm 1/4 either Scottish or Irish; from what I've read, a lot of that genealogy is mixed up, anyway.)

Happy St Patrick's Day!

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 06:23 pm:

Early on in our happy marriage, Capt. Paul discovered he can't make me do anything I don't want to. Unfortunately, I can't make him do anything, either.

If he wants his corned beef and cabbage, he can make it himself!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 08:58 pm:

LOL - good response, Dr Nat!

You all have a great weekend!

By Suzy Lofquist (Suzymn41) on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 10:24 pm:

CJ in Mn and anyone else who plans to do the Circle Tour. I know a great book to recommend! It's written by Mary Blocksma and titled The Fourth Coast. It's actually a diary of a woman who decides to drive around the Great Lakes alone. She interviews people she meets along the way which really personalizes the character of the different towns.I first read it in 1996 or so and it inspired me to go to Michigan the first time. Since then I've been back as often as I can swing it.It may be hard to locate now but a public library is your best bet. Mary has also authored a very charming nature diary, Great Lakes Nature. Good luck!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, March 18, 2007 - 06:45 pm:

CJinMN, Where in MN are you from? We're in MN too, but I grew up in the Keweenaw. So much to see in that area. Have a ball and give yourself enough time.
