It was birthday time for this little boy on the Pasty Cam eight years ago. As Mary mentions on today's Pasty Cam page, this daily feature celebrates its tenth anniversary today.

It will be no party today for those trying to travel in the upper Great Lakes. Here in pastyland, we have a blizzard warning up through Friday night. Sounds like a good time to hunker down with a piece of cake and a good book.

Sounds like a good plan, Dean. But...I have to go to work. We're
under a weather watch here in Toronto too. Two kinds of weather.
Snow first. Then freezing rain. Give me snow any time over
freezing rain.

Morning! Speaking of birthdays, it is my oldest son's birthday today. Happy Birthday AJ.
The weather is a little blustery this AM, but not snowing yet. We are under a blizzard warning or watch. (I can never get those two straight.)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, March 1, 2007 - 08:00 am:

Almost all of the area kids here are in school today, in spite of a Winter Storm Warming for snow changing to mix with sleet, followed by freezing rain. We are expecting 1/4 to 1/2" of ice today. Had this storm started just a little bit earlier this morning, I'm pretty sure all of the area's schools would be closed.

I hope everyone has a safe journey home, and that no one slips & falls on the ice! (My youngest is in the 9th grade.)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, March 1, 2007 - 08:01 am:

Oops--make that Winter Storm Warning. Sorry about that. Wishful thinking, maybe? Or maybe it's just that my fingers aren't warmed up yet this morning?

By Janet Boatman (Janetnwohio) on Thursday, March 1, 2007 - 08:03 am:

Good Morning and it is raining in Ohio and we had some thunder and lightning and that was the way the blizzard started in I think it was 78 sure don't want that again we was homebound for days and hubby went out on snowmobiles to bring trapped people into our firehouse a nasty time but our two boys just loved it.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, March 1, 2007 - 08:06 am:

Good morning from MN. The great blizzard gave us a whopping 1 1/2" last night. OOOOOOHHHHHHH!!! However we could get up to 20" tonight. Sigh!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, March 1, 2007 - 09:06 am:

Ookkkk. This is getting really weird. It is snowing right now, huge flakes, & we are getting huge claps & rumbles of thunder. I have heard of thunder snow before, but I've never seen it.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, March 1, 2007 - 09:57 am:

Thunder snow is cool! It's snowing hard in the Genesee/Flint area, too. Good thing I brought my boots to school in case I have to walk across an icy parking lot at lunch.

Same here Motown area. Woke up to sleet. Soon turned to freezing rain. Then a squall of big-flake snow and blowing. Then more freezing rain. Then a perfect calm. Now calm with rain (freezing?) pelting down. Holy Moly!

I just heard & saw pictures on the news, that a grocery store roof collapsed under the snow load in Milwaukee, WI. I did not hear whether or not there were any injuries. I did not realize that they had enough snow yet to have to worry about snow load.

I guess we might want to think about how much snow (and ice) is already on our roofs (especially if they are relatively flat). If we get too much more snow, maybe we might want to consider shoveling or raking the snow off of them?

Stay warm & be safe!

By FJL (Langoman) on Thursday, March 1, 2007 - 11:55 am:

No injuries in that roof collapse.......

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, March 1, 2007 - 01:17 pm:

Getting a rain mix, basically falling slush. Everybody stay safe out there.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, March 1, 2007 - 02:59 pm:

Well, most of the schools in our area dismissed early today. Even Saginaw Valley State University & CMU took the afternoon off. Our school district finally dismissed our secondary schools at 2 pm, and cancelled evening activities. So, my son's band concert for tonight was cancelled. I was looking forward to that, so that is a bummer. But, safety has to come first.

Honestly, they should have dismissed our schools mid-morning, at the latest. My husband had to drop off something at the high school about 10 am, & he said the roads were slick then. Our main roads are plowed, but they are slippery because of the freezing rain that is falling. The secondary roads & residential streets are a big mess, with at least 3" snow under many layers of sleet & ice.

At this rate, it will be interesting to see how many schools are open tomorrow?
