Only 8 short years ago, gas in the U.P. could still be had for a buck a gallon. In fact, I remember that year going on a trip down south, and filling up for about 65 cents a gallon around Florence, Kentucky. Just yesterday it felt like a bargain filling up in Baraga for 2.39.

A slight departure from the regular Shoebox Memory today. In case you missed it earlier, we had links to a poll about favorite recipes in Michigan. When the day started, the Michiganfoodways.org website showed "Calumet - Pasties" with only a 3% share of the vote. At last check it had risen to more than 40%. Be sure to add your vote.

The recipe on the Foodways website is actually one from Connie Hella, who makes a fine local pasty here in Calumet. It is very similar to Pasty Central's delicious U.P. style pasties, which you can order online anytime for shipment anywhere in the U.S.

I voted! We're up to 43% now, Charlie!

My votes in the too, holding strong at 43%...The good old days, when road triping was a sorta a hobby. Moreover, gas prices can go up to 3 bucks a gal. We'll still be heading to the UP!! :)

So that U.P. went from 3% to 45% in the favorite food poll in one day? That's a 1500% improvement!

Pasty Power

Notice gas was only 99 cents a gallon too!! They are suppose to go up to $3.00 by summer ......actually not too far from there. It was $2.59 as of yesterday here in Ontonagon!

I'm going to miss this year's Pasty Fest. Not coming up until the 3rd week of July this year. No fear though, I will be sure to get a few of Nylund's Pasties while I'm UP.

Hey, my alma mater! I thought that was Ontonagon when I saw the Holiday sign. We used to "buzz the gut" on that street back in the day. Can't do that now with the price of gas.

I was wondering if we had a cam shot from yesterday, I gave up dinnertime. I will have to go vote for pasties now. Charlie, I'm with you and get gas in Baraga whenever I am through there.

Voted for the Pasties, I had to remember where my loyalties lie cause I really like fresh Pretzels. At 53%.
