Craig Jordan spotted some ice on the shores of Lake Superior that had taken on the actual colors of the Big Lake itself. Most often we just see ice in white or somewhat clear shades, so these shots today are quite unique in their bluish/greenish tint. Craig made his stop for this photo opportunity along US 41, heading east into Baraga. I like the way he went in nice and close, to give us a good view of the colors within the ice formation.

Nice to see it breaking up, isn't it? Spring is definitely on the way. It's supposed to be 54 here today. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

They have that blue tint like the glaciers do, I think that has something to do with the density. They are great pictures.

Actually, it has nothing to do with the density of the ice. Rather, the amount of blue/green colour in the ice has to to with the amount of air bubbles and debris (sediments) trapped in the ice. Ice absorbs most colours but reflects blues and greens, which gives the ice (and glaciers for that matter) those attractive tints along the lakeshore.

Capt. Paul, I knew you would have the right reason for it. The blue is pretty obvious on glacier. I saw a few in Alaska and was amazed.

It wasn't frozen over very long this year.

I think I like the blue better in its liquid form when I can sit and listen to the rollers coming in and see the blue in their curls. Not needing a coat is another benefit, then, though this is lovely also.

I'm not ready for the ice to melt yet. My son is home from Iraq and
wanted to go ice fishing. Couldn't it wait til next week?

Well, Kosk, if the ice melts, your son can go fishing in a boat. :-) There is a walleye fishing contest on a river near here every year. They never know from one year to the next, whether the contest will be an ice fishing contest or a boat fishing (or a shore fishing) contest, for that matter. And, some years, it rapidly changes from one type of fishing to another during the two week period of the contest. You just learn to be flexible. The object is to have fun catching fish (ok, & the one with the biggest fish wins the prize).

I hope your son enjoys fishing in Lake Superior or wherever he fishes when he is home on leave! We appreciate his service to our country! Please thank him for us & give him a big hug! :-)

It looks like a skunk cabbage unfurling, or maybe an arium with its central spath. Arium? It's been so long since last summer I'm no longer sure of the terms. Well, a Jack-in-the-Pulpit, anyway.

Looks to me like a bit foot and crooked leg, and the block of ice down at the toes.

Thanks guys. Our son has been educating us. Having a computer
and digital camera, he has been able to put together many stories
of the war.

He'll fish where he can, I guess. We'll have to get the sauna going
for him too.

It's great to have him home.
