Welcome, John! Where is Wells?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 09:58 am:

Capt Paul you tied for Early Bird this morning. Congratulations!

Welcome, Wd8rth.

Is today the calm before the storm? I hope we don't get ice, but it's not looking good for us here in mid-Michigan. I've always said that snow is ok, just please leave out the ice. :-)

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 10:15 am:

Good Morning all. I don't want the ice either, Marianne. I am with you hoping to keep that away. I will be gone late tonight and don't want to drive home in it.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 10:23 am:

Well, I thought I was first, but Dean apparently didn't think so. Besides, I've gotten the Early Bird before but I don't think Japei ever has, so I can happily give up my share and let Japei celebrate his first Early Bird today!! ;-)

Congrats to Williams Parts on winning the 32nd Annual Mite B Hockey Tournament held this last weekend at the George Gipp Arena.

Thank you for the help Mary ;-)

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 10:36 am:

Finally a Good Morning here! For those of you that have ice in your weather forecast...get and/or be prepared! We just got our power back after 3 1/2 days. We were some of the luckier ones! To sum it up...having a outhouse would have been a luxery, ha!

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 10:44 am:

This next storm is scheduled to drop a bunch of snow on this part of Wisconsin. 4 inches over night and then more tomorrow. We just finished blowing out the last snowfall. Parking lots are being cleaned up with end loaders and trucks. They are hauling the snow away as they do in the CC area. I have not seen this before around here. Our average snowfall is only 47 inches or so. We aren't there but,.......

By John W Anderson (Wd8rth) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 10:58 am:

Thanks everyone

Wells is the northern suburb of Escanaba and home of the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 11:54 am:

For those who are interested: Wells is adjacent to the north side of Escanaba. It was named for J.W. Wells, who also has the state park on the shore of Lake Michigan named after him. In the late 19th century, the I. Stephenson Lumber Company operated the largest harwoods mill in the country at Wells. Diminsional timber from the company was used in many public buildings, and provided flooring the the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt lake City. The Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad was a subsidary of the I. Stephenson company. When the company closed due to a loss of timber supply, Hubert Shepeck led a group that bought the mill, operating Shepeck Timber and Diminsion untill the kiln burned in the 1960s. Today, you can still see the affects of the companies operations with deadheads in the river, railroad lines, and some building ruins. In the Escanaba area, it is the closest you can get to the Keweenaw's industrial ruins landscape.

Everyone have a great day and enjoy the weather back home!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 12:53 pm:

Nice to meet you John!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 01:23 pm:

Ok, so I guess I am the Early Bird today?!?! ;-)

The storms are rolling into Houston today as I type. They are forecasting some pretty heavy duty storms tonight into tomorrow morning, then clearing for the weekend and cool, which is good!! The Dr. and I have softball on Friday night and a benefit car show Saturday.....

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 01:51 pm:

We are expecting Sleet tonight, actually saw a salt truck out in Ann Arbor this morning and it was dry and still is. I guess just getting a start on it by spreading as much now as they can.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 02:30 pm:

Now Capt. Paul, don't go gettin' all sedimental over your "Early Bird" award.

Sounds like stormy weather on this site today!

Janie T., I can't imagine being without electricity for 3-1/2 days in the winter. I hope your pipes did not freeze! And, I hope that you are not hit again with more ice with this new storm.

The prediction for our area in mid-Michigan is for up to 1/4 to 1/2" of ice, with additional snow & sleet & other nonsense. I would much rather have the Blizzard Watch that Copper Country has!

But, the real ones that I feel for right now are those who might getting the really severe weather from this massive storm. I have heard weather reports predicting the possibility of very severe tornadoes, & lots of them, the most severe & the most in numbers that have been seen in a number of years. My prayers are with those people who might be in the path of those tornadoes, etc!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 03:41 pm:

Some years ago I decided to build a generator, built it and put it in the garage, the kids and Precious all laughed about the generator that I built. That weekend the electricity went out for three days, we had a working furnace, and most important to Andrea the Irish dancer a tv to watch. Haven't used it since the big blackout a few years ago, but it is sitting in the shed waiting to make me look good again. I should run it and put new gas in it but I will wait till I need it.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 04:02 pm:

That's really cool, Mikie! You know though, that if the power goes out in your area, it is unlikely that the gas stations will have the power to pump gas for you. I found that out a few years ago, when the power went out on the west side of town, but not our side. My oldest son & I were going out for a drive west, and we had planned to fill my car on the way out of town. We could not fill our car because the pumps were down because of a power outage that we did not even know about, both on that side of town & that whole part of the county. We had to drive 30 miles to even get gas, & we would have run out had we had to drive much further before we found gas.

I guess that's part of the reason that they try to tell people to keep your car's gas tank at least half full? I do wish my husband would follow that little rule. He has run out of gas many times, thinking that "E" meant that he had "Enough" to get to the gas station. One would think that he would learn one of these days. (I can talk because I've only run out of gas once in all of the years since I have been driving, & I got my full driver's license when I was 14.)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 04:07 pm:

Precious had an old station wagon that the gas gauge didn't work on she had the kids pushing her all the time when they ran out of gas. Then we got rich and had new cars and guess what she is like Mariannes husband, still runs on fumes. When she runs out of gas she blames me for it.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 04:16 pm:

Welcome Wd8rth!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 05:44 pm:

Speaking of nasty weather, here's a story for you:

A husband and his wife were sound asleep when suddenly the phone rang.

The husband picked up the phone and said, "Hello? How the heck do I know? What do I look like, a weatherman?" He then slammed the phone down and settled into bed.

"Who was that?" asked his wife.

"I don't know. It was some guy who wanted to know if the coast was clear."

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 05:51 pm:

I'm glad to see you back in rare form, Joanie. I was beginning to worry about you because we haven't heard very much from you lately. :-)

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 06:48 pm:

Looks as though the blizzard warning has been lifted.

Off to the tanning spa!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 07:02 pm:

Mr Bill, where do you live? I'm curious, because, at least as of almost 7:00 tonight, there is still a
Blizzard Warning for Houghton

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 07:06 pm:

Wow, the 4:51 broadcast took it off. Looks like it's back on again. Scratch the tanning spa, oh well!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 09:27 pm:

Actually it was the blizzard watch that had been lifted in favor of a blizzard warning......
