Approaching the start of the second year of the Pasty Cam, this was the scene in our back yard here in Eagle River. Lake Superior in the distance... not much ice, very much like this year. As I recall, that was an El Niño year, too.

Good Morning, woke up to the snow plow this morning. We only got an inch but they are staying ahead of it.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 08:19 am:

Good morning. Did you get much snow, Deb?

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 08:42 am:

Seeing the deer in the picture above makes me think of Don (who
passed away last December). He loved his deer! Bucko (the first
picture) was his favorite who came in year after year. The 2nd
picture is my personal favorite that I call "Leaning In."

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 08:52 am:

My daughter has a group of deer living in her backyard on her
property near Ishpeming. What a beautiful sight. All of her deer,
rabbits, chipmunks and two beavers also have names.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 09:09 am:

Barb, love the pictures. I have looked at your album before and really like your pictures.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 09:22 am:

How beautiful. If you go to Royal Gorge in Colorado, their deer do the same thing. Mine out here are antelope, but we currently have a herd almost that size.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 09:48 am:

Good morning. The yard looks like a big sno-cone! No snow, all freezing rain, hate it!

Hey, there's my favorite photographer, the one, the only, the Z-Man!

Nice pictures Barb! We have names for all of our critters too!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 10:05 am:

Zman didn't get his early bird award yet.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 10:33 am:

Hey, Judy, you're right, where's the Z-Man's "get up early" award????

I'll give him one; WAY TO GO Z-MAN, YOU DA MAN!!!

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 11:54 am:

The deer sure are enjoyable to watch. To think that I used to hunt deer. Now I couldn't even think about shooting one of those beautiful animals. [not that I have anything against hunting; I'm just saying that I could no longer do it.]

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 12:49 pm:

I love the photos of the deer eating out of his hands. I wish my deer would do that. I put food out, and enjoy the view as they eat, although just opening the door scares them away. VERY little snow here in Rochester Hills, MI. Although I am prepared, got my fireplace stoked, a cup of tea in my hand and sitting at my old computer reading Pasty. The only thing that could be better is being in the UP. I hated to come home.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 12:50 pm:

They sure are a beautiful species. We just love watching them.
One good thing about hunting is that it keeps the population down. Starvation is very sad plus the fact that their prey can sense a weak deer. Hunting is quick and fast, starvation is not.

By FJL (Langoman) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 12:59 pm:

Looking at the bridge and tech's cams your getting snow. Adding to the season total.........

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 01:02 pm:

Love the deer pics too! JH, we got 9" here. We left here about 4:15 yesterday afternoon with about an inch of snow and no sign of a blizzard. When we left the bowling alley, everybody was snowed in after the plow went by. We couldn't believe the snow we'd gotten while we were there and it was still coming down. We had to shovel people out and the ride home was not fun. Hubby's still out snow blowing the driveway. It's our first snowstorm in a few years.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 01:46 pm:

well, the forecast was for the big snow, but we got maybe 7 inches or so...just a dusting. A lot of hype and not much action, although my wife wussed out and didn't go to work because of the roads.
Its all plowed already and just like any other day, except its very white.

Supposedly we're supposed to get another 6-8 between today and tomorrow...then I'll think its quite a bit if it hits more than a foot.

GO BUCKY !!!! The Badgers need the big game against Ohio State today in BB

OT. The picture of the old white house in yesterdays what's up page looks familiar. Is it between Sixth and Seventh St. in Calumet and across from a school. My grandparents were friends with people that lived in that area, and as a little girl I would go with them to visit. And if I remember correctly, the house used to be green.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 03:42 pm:

It's been snowing in Illinois for the past couple hours. Why the heck was it rain last night when the temp was 20? Now the temp is 34 and it's all a beautiful, white, fluffy snow and it is sticking. If this keeps up the snowmobiles will be humming down the roads tomorrow. I always loved the sound of those snow machines! Reminds me of UP north.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 09:43 pm:

Barb, I love that buck heading for the camera! That's an awesome picture. I have one of an elk bull in Yellowstone that has it looking straight into

I love to see the deer close-up pictures, especially when they are on someone else's land. I've seen the damage that they can do with landscaping various places, whether it is small trees, bushes, etc.

It seems like a couple of times a year around this area, the deer end up jumping through large windows, into local colleges, people's living rooms, etc. And then the deer get scared & go nuts inside the buildings. Some guy killed one with his bear hands, by breaking its neck, to keep his family safe.

Our small city has hired bow hunters a couple of times in the last several years to trim down the herd here inside the city limits, as safely as possible.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 09:53 pm:

Hmm--I knew that didn't look right. Make that some guy killed one with his BARE hands by breaking its neck, to keep his family safe. He had cornered it in a bedroom of his daughter's house. (I think that one happened to be out of state, but it was last year, if I remember right.)
