Who wants to ride the Zamboni? Jonathan Hopper watched the Calumet Armory Zamboni go 'round and 'round eight years ago.

The Zamboni seems to have a cult following, from small town machines like this to NHL arenas that sometimes have dueling Zambonis. The Zamboni even has its own song, written and performed by the Gear Daddies, a now-disbanded group from Minnesota. The song title? The wish of every Zamboni fan: "I Want to Drive the Zamboni."

Good Morning! I woke up this morning to hear birds singing! That was the first time this year. Little do they know that this rain that we are having now will changeover to snow very shortly. And, we have a high wind advisory. The gusts are already pretty high.

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 06:56 am:

A windy day! Good morning!

By Vicky P (Vickyp) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 07:01 am:

Good morning from windy Mount Clemens.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 07:01 am:

Yes, but does it do floors? windows? pants?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 07:04 am:

Did you all hear about the Zamboni driver who decided to take it for a ride somewhat recently? I guess he might have had a little bit to drink? Anyway, he was hungry, so he drove the Zamboni out of the arena and over to a nearby fastfood restaurant to pick up some food. Needless to say, he was "relieved of his job", and he faces a number of charges in court.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 07:29 am:

There's a children's book called " Z is for Zamboni"--a hit with
many children here in Canada. My cousin's kids in the Copper
Country have received many hockey toys from their Canadian
cousins--including zambonis for the Toronto Maple Leafs,
Montreal Candiens (Fr. spelling) and the Ottawa Senators. I have
seen them used for dueling zamboni races.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 07:33 am:

We always joked that we needed a Zambomi for the pond we skated on as kids. Shoveling and trying to smooth that ice for a hockey game was exhausting.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 07:44 am:

Good morning from MN. We've been sleeping with the window open the past two nights and you sure can breathe better. However, we supposedly have a wicked storm coming AGAIN! Where have we heard that before and only got a dusting? I'm anxious to see what happens.

By joanne sherick (Shedoesnails) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 07:55 am:

Good Morning. It's snowing & blowing here in mid-michigan.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 08:13 am:

Happy Birthday to David Hiltunen!!!! Today you can have your cake and eat it too!!!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 08:23 am:

Happy b'day, David! And how about that American Idol? And how about LaKisha from Flint, MI! Woo-hoo!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 08:38 am:

Happy Birthday, David. And Happy George Washington's Birthday, you all.

I'm not sure that I got an answer to my question a couple of days ago. What is Fat Thursday, and what are the origins of its timing, during Lent? I am really curious.

Thanks in advance.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 08:40 am:

Happy birthday, David! Eat some cake for me cuz I'm trying to cut down.

Loved American Idol too. I swear all of those black girls were great. They could sure belt it out. But I love Haley too. The girls are AGAIN so much better than the guys. It's not fair that they have to cut 6 of them when at least 8 or 9 should stay. I like Brady and Phil for the guys. We'll have to find a forum to talk about this.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 08:42 am:

I heard a local news clip on TV this morning about LaKisha. She does have a great, powerful voice. I heard that Simon said on the air last night that the other 23 finalists might as well pack their bags & go home.

(I have only watched about 2 hours of American Idol total this season. Seeing the Seattle audition stuff was really funny--some of those people are such bad singers, etc.)

Houska Sintamapaiva...that's probably not spelled correctly, but it still means Happy Birthday! I hope the Birthday Fairy is good to you!!

That Lakisha from Flint is AWESOME! She will give the rest a run for their money. I hope she wins or goes very far! You Go Girl!!

By Dean Woodbeck (Dwoodbeck) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 10:55 am:

According to Wikipedia, Fat Tuesday is the English translation of "Mardi Gras" from French. It is the day before Lent begins -- the last day of Carnival, and the day to pig out on Paczki before beginning the 40 days of Lent.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 11:01 am:

Thanks, Dean. That gives us a real definition of Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday. But, there was some mention of a Fat Thursday on this board on Tuesday, and that that was what some others celebrate, and that they didn't understand where Fat Tuesday came from. Since I had never heard before of Fat Thursday, I am curious what Fat Thursday's origins are & what it is, etc.?

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 11:01 am:

I was going to say: "Hey Everybody its David Hiltunens birthaday", but several already beat me to it! That's OK tho! We all know he's OLD (but not as old as me!) hee hee LOL!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVE! from SE Trolland where we still got huge snowbanks and about 6 to 8 inches of snow! (St. Clair county)

"Tayttykoon paivasi onnellisista ajatuksista ja auringon- paisteesta" "Onnellista syntymapaivaa!"

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 11:23 am:

Thank you everyone for my 56 th. birthday wishes.
How did you ever know it was my birthday?? I got to get to the gym and then to the liquor store. You all have a nice day too, i'll be back later.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 12:32 pm:

Geez Dave, you only told us about it a zillion times.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 12:37 pm:

The Germans and Polish don't recognize Fat Tuesday. They celebrate their "pig-outs" on Fat Thursday. I guess they didn't want to follow the French. I think the Italians also have Fat Thursday.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 01:16 pm:

Well, actually, the Germans & the Polish here in mid-Michigan (Bay City, Saginaw, Midland, & Frankenmuth) DO recognize & celebrate Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent, complete with pig-outs & Punschkis (sp?), et al. The local TV stations in our area featured large segments on various newscasts about how many Punschkis the various bakeries & restaurants made & will sell out of, and various other celebrations. (One bakery even came up with a supposedly new variation this year, "Pig in Blanket", where they put sausage & maybe eggs in the Punschkis.)

The local TV stations here have made no mention of Fat Thursday that I have ever heard. Fat Tuesday is the only big day here that I have ever heard of celebrating. Maybe that's a localized thing, or mainly those who celebrate Fat Thursday from the Old World (Germany & Poland, etc.)? That's why I am so puzzled & curious, since I have never heard anything about Fat Thursday.

I would be surprised if the Italians have Fat Thursday, since the Catholic church, I believe, is the official church of Italy, and it has such a strict observance of Lent, with no meat on Wed & Fri, & no to several other things, in the interests of sacrificing?

I guess I am more puzzled now than before, about just what Fat Thursday is?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 01:29 pm:

Ok, I finally took the time to Google Fat Thursday. (It just isn't celebrated here in mid-Michigan.)

BUT Fat Thursday is the Thursday before Lent begins, not during Lent; that's why I could not understand it before. This year, Fat Thursday was last Thursday, Feb 15. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_Thursday

And, Joanie is right: Fat Thursday is celebrated in Germany, Poland, & Italy--it's just that it was last week, not today. :-)

By Danbury (Danbury) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 01:48 pm:

Congratulations, Dave - hope you're having a good one.

Sidenote: After reading the whole thing up, the question of Fat Thursday is answered. What is still open is - why is it Tuesday stateside?

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 02:30 pm:

Perfect example of Fat Tuesday in Mid and SE Michigan would be a bakery in Hamtramck. I think that sums it up here anyway, I'm Polish on Dads side and every holiday has food from that neighborhood.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 03:06 pm:

How about those galumpkis???? With potica for dessert. Yikes, I almost forgot about the best one, those yummy perogies fried in butter.

I'm gettin' fat just thinkin' about it!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 04:08 pm:

I've never heard of the first 2 things you mentioned, Joanie, but my neighbor is Polish and she makes the perogies. They are so good.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 04:11 pm:

I have to agree with Thumbgardener: I've only heard of perogies, too, not the other two. Joanie, would you please clue us in?

By Roger Somero (Rsomero) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 04:26 pm:

We did get snow! A few inches at the 2 to 3 thousand foot elevation.

By Kelly Kidd (Ellykay) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 04:46 pm:

Galumpkis are stuffed cabbage rolls.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 05:12 pm:

Okay Kelly, yeppers, but they are special stuffed cabbage rolls, eh? Potica is a pastry that has a thin crust that you roll out and fill with a chopped walnut mixture. It's then rolled up, baked and sliced. The best part is smearing the slice with butter, lots of butter. Why do you think our cheeks are always plump and rosey and we always have BIG smiles on our faces??? Heck, this Polish girl has BIG all over!!!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 05:42 pm:

Boy Dave's been gone a long time, must still be pumpin' iron at the gym or lost in the liquor store. Well, I sure hope he's enjoying his B-Day, he's a pistol!!!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 07:00 pm:

Show me the way to go home.I'am tired and I want to go to bed.I had a little drink about a hour ago and it went right to my head..........I forgot the rest of the words to the song.I was gone to long,Barbie said.I musta got lost,I had no cell service either. And no I wasn't at Hooter's.Russ sent me a Hooter's calender 2007 today.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 07:41 pm:

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, February 23, 2007 - 06:40 am:

Me too, David.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Friday, February 23, 2007 - 04:01 pm:

Thank you everyone for the Birthday greetings! Some people just think of it as just another day,and I myself have had B-days as such. Some like Barbie, take the whole week,as we came here from L.Mich. to camp in the Smokies each August.
At 56 I have lived longer then my Father and my Sister. My goal is to beat Grandma, she was 97.So when it's your Birthday,I would like to wish you so.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 01:55 pm:

David, I think it finishes like this....wherever I may roam, by land or sleet or foam, you can always hear me singing the song....show me the way to go home. Not sure though.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 02:05 pm:

OOPS!!! I meant sea, not sleet. Sorry, sometimes the fingers don't listen to the brain.
