A look at the Chassell Community Center from eight years ago. Today the building looks much the same, including the snow surrounding the building. Chassell has other significant buildings, too, including the old school, kept in top condition, home to the historical society and site of the trail head for the Chassell Classic cross country ski trail. In fact, you can see some photos of the Chassell trail at the Keweenaw Trails web site.

Almost...good for you Trollperson. Beautiful day about to dawn
here in Toronto. The days really are lengthening--just like the
word Lent suggests.

Past news item

Ironwood Daily Globe (Ironwood, Michigan) 1937 July 15
Girl Rescued
Redridge
An act of heroism in rescuing from drowning a young girl who was swept over the spillway of the Redridge dam and badly injured Sunday was performed bay a Boy Scout, Kenneth Simonson 16 of Redridge.
Jennie Raisanen age 14, the young girl who was saved, was sitting on along across the tope of the spillway dangling her feet in the water. Getting off the log , she lost her balance in the current and swept down the descent of the spillway, some 500 feet, to the edge. Here the force of the water carried her over and she dropped 15 feet to a rock ledge below and from this ledge fell another 20 feet to the water basin.

Well, the future looks brighter, I saw "Hoggy Doggy Daddy" our groundhog, this morning. He was stretching, yawning and foraging for food.

It looks like the UP is in for another blizzard this weekend, for us, it'll be rain.

A long time friend and neighbor died Sunday. Her funeral is today She celebrated her 100th B'Day on January 13th. Her name was Martha Backlund Glynn. She was born and raised in Felch. She was predeceased by brothers, Arthur, Godfrey, Salem and Eskill Backlund and a sister, Esther Carlson. Two brothers, Albert and Adolph, survive her. She taught in the Felch School System for 4 years before moving downstate. Her obituary is in today's Lansing State Journal. A wonderfull lady. She drove herself and a grand daughter up to Felch as recently as 5 or 6 years ago.

Paul, so sorry about the loss of your good friend.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 - 12:22 pm:

Sad to loose her, she would have been a fun person to talk to. Sounds like she lived a great life, you see a lot in 100 years.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 - 02:43 pm:

Hey, how come there aren't any caves in the UP? What's funny is that in Kansas they have caves all over. They have so many caves in Kansas that they use them for boat storage.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 - 03:34 pm:

Caves don't form in all rock types. Typically you find them in limestone and dolomite. The western U.P. has almost no limestone, so no caves. The eastern U.P, however, does have limestone and I've been told a few caves, too, although I have never seen them and couldn't tell you where they are.

Looks like everyone is enjoying the gorgeous weather, just like I am. It got up to +48 today!!!
Thanks Dr. Nat!

The Chassell Community Center. We used to play basketball in there. I can't remember the exact dimensions of the floor anymore, but it is small.

Back in the 60s, there were a couple of years, especially against Dollar Bay Bluebolts, that were really exiting at that place...also Negaunee St. Paul, and of course Doelle :)

I bet you could fit maybe 200 hundred people in there for basketball..that might be pushing it :)

There used to be a jukebox and a pool table in the basement. We changed into our uniforms in the kitchen..the visitors got the changing room with coat hooks and a shower.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 - 07:59 pm:

We had a beautiful day here in mid-Michign, with a high of 41.

We have snow predicted for tonight, and our high tomorrow is predicted to be 31, and high winds. That's still a lot better than it was about 10 days ago!

By Roger Somero (Rsomero) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 02:36 am:

There is talk of snow in the San Jose area, probably around 2 to 3 thousand feet-ouch!

By Roger Somero (Rsomero) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 04:30 pm:

Oops, meant a few inches at that elevation!
