Morning!
First Post

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 08:18 am:

Good morning. Pretty quiet on here today. I just watched on the news that Bismarck, ND now has set a new record for the most snow angels.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 08:31 am:

Good morning! Got some snow last night, but not much.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 08:45 am:

Good morning, the sun is shining and the birds are singing, won't be long now!
Judy, that was interesting. I could participate in a sport like that, right next to the 99 year old woman. Heck, all you have to do is lay there and flap around like a fish out of water. I wonder if she needed help getting back up????

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 09:40 am:

What is that building?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 09:47 am:

Good Morning! We have one more night here, when the temps go down to zero. And then...we're supposed to have highs in the low 30's this week. Woohoo! It's not enough to cause flooding from melting snow, just a slow melt. Now, if we just don't get ice tomorrow night...

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 09:51 am:

Good Morning Everyone! 7 degrees, windy, clear,
blue sky here in Houghton.
For you NASCAR fans, Daytona 500 on at 2:00 EST
on FOX network. That's were hubby and I will be
in front of the TV set.
Have a great day!

Maija-the picture of that building is Portage
Health Hospital in Hancock.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 09:55 am:

How many Dale, Jr. fans are out there?
How many Jeff Gordon fans are out there?
How many Tony Stewart fans are out there?

Just taking a little NASCAR survey.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 09:56 am:

HATE Nascar!!! Anybody can turn left for crying out loud. LOL

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 10:13 am:

That's funny, Deb S! Sure, anyone should be able to keep going in circles forever, but you don't get anywhere that way. I would get tired of driving before the race is done. Two of my sons & my husband are devout NASCAR fans. My oldest son went with friends to the Michigan Speedway race this summer.

I guess something similar could be said about playing golf--you spend hours just chasing a little white ball down the course... I do watch (well, usually more listen to) golf, though, because I find it soothing to have on in the background, while I'm working on other things. NASCAR is loud.

Ok, Joanie - my oldest son is a devout Dale Jr fan. My second son's favorite changes from time to time. I don't think my husband cares. If I were watching, I might be cheering for Jeff Gordon.

Today, the NASCAR fans in our family will have the bigger TV downstairs. And, I'll watch the golf tournament upstairs on the bedroom TV, while hopefully getting some work done!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 10:22 am:

The best part that I watch when NASCAR is on is the last 50 laps. My son, John is a Jeff Gordon fan, you can tell by his and his wife's wardrobe, and according to him, the best parts of the race are the crashes. Hmmm, he always was a little gear-head.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 10:27 am:

Okay, fine. I don't like Nascar at all. It's too loud for me and it seems totally insignificant. However, my 2nd son is a huge Jeff Gordon fan, my youngest son loves it too but I'm not sure who his favorite was. My husband's favorite was Dale Sr. AND his favorite parts are the crashes. Now that's just disgusting. Give me a baseball or football game. Don't mind golf but I'm terrible at it. And watching it is like watching paint dry.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 10:30 am:

Deb-I was going to mention the fact that my second son's favorite part of NASCAR races are the crashes, too. These guys...

By tom ghering (Tomgheringtcmi) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 10:31 am:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mi/ppcs-mi.html Some nice old post cards from anyones area.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 10:52 am:

My son and daughter-in-law are big fans of Kasey Kahne. Their best friend is a Jeff Gordon fan.
My husband and I enjoy going to local stock car races. Especially when they have the school bus figure 8 races.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 11:28 am:

I don't watch NASCAR, why watch a bunch of cars drive around in circles for 2 hours?

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 11:43 am:

It does take a little bit of talent to reach speeds close to 200 mph. Remember the slot cars? It was hard keeping that car on track when you hit the curves. My car always jumped the track. Just imagine being a driver on the real track. It takes skill along with a lot of guts!

By patricia landman (Tricia) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 11:52 am:

happy sunday, all!
would like to know what the building is in the picture. anyone know?
thanks
tricia

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 11:54 am:

200 mph?? that's for weinies!! ;-) Try going 330 mph AND it only takes 4.5 seconds to watch a race; now that's my kind of racing, short sweet and to the point......

Oh and btw, Dr. Nat posted a volcano message on yesterdays board that you might want to take a peek at in case your curious.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 12:02 pm:

from the Archives
The building in the picture from 8 years ago is Portage Hospital. This is the new one where everything was moved from the old one down by the waterfront, which is now a business incubator operated by Finlandia University.

thank you charlie, what a lovely looking facility.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 12:23 pm:

Capt. Paul, you must be talking about the 1/4 mile races, aka, NHRA? Those are my favorite; the smell of burning rubber and nitro filling the air. Just kinda gives you a big rush, eh? Now that's racing at it's finest!!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 12:38 pm:

I would have thought that just driving in circles is mindless. I think that the problems come in when some drivers decide to play bumper cars, or "draft", & then don't quite have their cars under control.

Dale E., Sr. died in a NASCAR race, I believe at Daytona. That's kind of when I lost interest in NASCAR. (No, I never was a fan of his, but still...he was supposed to be the Intimidator. And, my oldest son was a huge Dale S fan.) Hopefully, the head & neck restraints will prevent a lot of future similar tragedies. I do have to say that I like NASCAR racing a lot better than Indy (cart) racing, though.

Deb, the fact that watching golf is like watching paint dry, plus the announcers speak quietly & in a soothling voice, is why I can have it on in the background, & I can get work done! The noise of NASCAR races gives me a headache (my guys seem to think that the only volume setting on the TV is loud, even though the broadcasters have the race noise hugely turned down. (When my oldest son went to the NASCAR race at Michigan Speedway, he bought special noise-cancelling headphones that he wore the whole time to cut the noise way back. One of his majors is audio, so he knows what sound levels can hurt human hearing, etc.)

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 01:02 pm:

Me-Sterling Marlin fan. Hubby-Jeff Gordon fan.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 02:04 pm:

A long, long time ago when my husband tried to get me interested in NASCAR, we were discussing the pros and cons of the sport. He looked at me with love in his eyes and said, "The best part of the race is when the announcer says, gentlemen, start your engines". "What's your favorite part of the race, Joanie", he asks me. I reply with love in my eyes, "I like when the announcer says, gentlemen, turn off your engines".
Needless to say, I am now hooked, but just hooked on the last 50 laps.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 03:05 pm:

Just heard that "Junior" has a good chance of winning the race. He has a new pit crew chief. He came all the way from China. His name is Win Won Soon.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 03:09 pm:

Good afternoon from Mishawaka, IN. I'm a Dale, Jr. fan. Three of the drivers racing today are from South Bend, IN. South Bend and Mishawaka are right next to each other. We hear lots about the three locals, of course. I've been to the Brickyard 400 once. My husband has had tickets since the first year NASCAR started racing in Indy. I was lucky to get to go with him the one time. I enjoy watching the races on tv more than being there. My son is a Dale, Jr. fan, husband a Jr. fan, daughter-in-law a Tony Stewart fan, 9 year old grandson has always been for Bobby Labonte fan and 6 year old granddaughter is a Jr. fan(if Dad was for someone else that's who she'd be in favor of).

Tomorrow we have the day off of school, not for snow or cold, but for President's Day. I hope we are finished with snow and cold days. We'll be in school till July if they keep it up.

By P.Weed (Pweed) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 04:00 pm:

Geez Dad, you were up early this morning!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 04:17 pm:

Oohhh, Joanie--that's something else--his name is "Win Won Soon"!

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 04:23 pm:

This race is the 6th anniversary of Dale Sr's death. Watched a sports thingy on it yesterday.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 04:37 pm:

So if Brad Pitt drove for NASCAR and he had to fuel-up, does that mean that Pitt had to pit?

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 08:55 pm:

I feel bad for Mark Martin. He was so close to the finish line and here comes Kevin Harvick to win the race. Kevin Harvick just won the Busch
race yesterday. Give the old guy a break!!!

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 09:21 pm:
