Dean Woodbeck (Dwoodbeck) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 05:54 am:

In 1999, Jonathan Hopper took this beautiful shot of the winter sunset over Great Sand Bay on the western coast of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

The snow was late getting started this year, but just keeps on coming, with little snowflakes in the National Weather Service forecast as far as the eye can see. Temperatures are expected to hit double digits by the end of the week, which should make the cross country skiing even better.

First PostGood morning!

Mornin'

By Therese (Therese) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 06:02 am:

I took a closer look at the photo above: no onion-bulbed spires in the trees. This was taken before the good monks built their present monastery. God bless them and keep them warm this winter!

By Smfwixom (Trollperson) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 06:10 am:

Congrats on the "Early Bird" Therese!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 06:12 am:

Good Morning!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 06:48 am:

Morning! Great Sand Bay's even gorgeous in the winter.

By Carole (Carole) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 07:50 am:

My favorite place and such memories!!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 08:16 am:

Great Sand Bay; a wonderful place to relax, sit on the beach, and look for agates or other goodies that wash in......

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 08:24 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka, IN. It's a snow day here in IN. I was ready to leave for school when I happened to see our district listed on the school closings. I called the building and sure enough we are closed. Some how I never got the phone call this am. The phone tree has a problem I guess. At this rate we will get out for this school year on Aug. 10th and go back for next school year on Aug. 13.

Those of you in the storms path---stay warm and safe.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 08:27 am:

I love the western Lake Superior shores of the Keweenaw, but would someone please clue me in as to exactly where Great Sand Bay is? I can't place it in my mind. Thanks for answering my dumb question. :-)

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 09:05 am:

Between Eagle River and Eagle Harbour, about 2 miles or so past Jacobs Falls and the JamPot.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 09:13 am:

There is no such thing as a dumb question.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 09:55 am:

I was just going to say that, Cha-Cha. It's a smart person that's asking for an answer, a stupid person doesn't care.

Speaking of stupid; we have blizzard-like conditions in Illinois and hubby, who is a pipefitter, has been working outside all winter. I would have thought that the contractor would have shut the job down today, but no, work goes on. Sure hope he gets sent home early, I don't know how he can even navigate with the layers of clothes he has to wear.

By FJL (Langoman) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 09:55 am:

You wana bet??

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 10:15 am:

Thanks, Capt Paul. I think I have pictures of it in my albums, if I go back to look, now that I know where to look!

And, thank you Cindy & Joanie!

I hope everyone stays safe & warm today! I think we are too far north for the Blizzard, but we are supposed to get some snow tonight.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 10:33 am:

Don't forget tomorrow is Valentine's Day!!

Did you know that skunks celebrate Valentine's Day? Do you know why? Because they are very scent-imental.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 11:06 am:

Now that joke really stinks.... :-D

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 11:32 am:

Marianne, I agree we are too far north. We might get a bit but it won't be much. Adrian was supposedly hit pretty hard this morning. Still dry by me though. It can snow after the blue and gold banquet for cub scouts tonight.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 11:55 am:

Brooke, I hope the snow holds off for your Blue & Gold Banquet. All three of our sons were Cub Scouts, so we went to a number of Blue & Gold Banquets. My oldest son (now at Mich Tech) is an Eagle Scout now, and our middle & our youngest sons are both Life Scouts. They are working on their Eagle Scouts. Scouting is a great activity for boys. They learn a lot in scouting.

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 12:15 pm:

Lots of snow heading our way tonight- Oakland County. So we are going to leave a day early for the great UP. (I know what a shame). Cant wait to see the UP in all its glory in the winter.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 12:27 pm:

Have a safe trip, Murtomania! the earlier you leave today, the better, from the forecasts that I've seen. :-)

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 12:30 pm:

He has a lot of fun at Cub Scouts. Just went outside to get my pop out of the car and it is getting pretty windy, went right through the jacket.
Kathie, Drive safe wish I was going with you!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 01:27 pm:

Hey, I wonder if Capt. Paul is going to get his wife a big rock for Valentine's Day???

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 02:33 pm:

Yeah, maybe a geodite or an agate or some other fancy rock. I'm gettin' nuttin' for Valentine's Day.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 02:40 pm:

You're getting' sumpin' for Valentine's Day Cindy and it's from me: HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 02:54 pm:

LOL - Brooke, in this frigid weather, you are lucky that your pop did not freeze solid! Seriously, I hope you have a good banquet tonight.

Cindy, I'm used to getting anything for Valentine's Day, either. I guess I like it better that way because now I can order what I want (for knitting, computer, or quilting supplies, etc), and that way I actually get things that are useful to me. I've never been a real fan of chocolate, plus I don't need the extra calories, my husband (who would end up being the only one to eat it) certainly does not need the calories, and roses just wilt in a few days. I guess I have gotten a more practical as I have aged a little bit.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 02:57 pm:

Correction to my last message: It should read:
...
Cindy, I'm Used to not getting anything for Valentine's Day, either.
...

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 03:19 pm:

Actually we're going to a talk about Australian/New Zealand agates tomorrow night, so while I'm not technically getting her an agate for Valentine's Day, she does get to combine 3 of her loves; New Zealand, agates, and me ;-)

Santa left Dr. Nat coal in her stocking one year during Christmas; she absolutely loved it!!!! Go figure.......

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 03:49 pm:

Capt. Paul, you fissure me up! You are just so sedimental!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 03:56 pm:

Paul, I gave Precious coal one year also, she asked me if I was strong enough to turn it in to a diamond, and if not to head to Zales. Kids loved it, she normally never comes back with an answer, but that Christmas she got me. Ended up with another ring.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 04:12 pm:

Now, Capt Paul...surely you will get Dr Nat something for Valentine's Day, I hope. You two are a fair amount younger than my husband & I are. :-)

Thanks a good one, Mikie! Precious did get you with that one.

Joanie, you are red-hot today with your puns!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 04:57 pm:

I have a farmer friend down the road and you know what her husband gives her for Valentine's Day every year? Hogs and kisses.

When we lived in Austria, I think it was around December 5th, we celebrated St. Nicholas Day. We would put our shoes by the door and if we were good St. Nicholas would put candy in our shoes. If we were bad, the Krampus, (help me with the spelling, Mikie, or Danbury), would put coal in our shoes.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 05:13 pm:

All I need for Valentine's Day is my wonderful hubby!

I'm not sure if I need anymore rocks. Every time we move, we spend more money on trucking a few tonnes of rock around the world than we spend on moving our other possesions. But that's the problem when I've never met a rock I didn't like.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 05:31 pm:

Remember that movie with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, "The Long, Long Trailer. Every place they went Lucy would find a special rock and put it in the trailer. Desi couldn't figure out why the trailer couldn't make it up hills.
Every place we visit we always make sure we bring home souvenirs, rocks and driftwood. There's nothing better than bringing home a chunk of your favorite place, no tee shirts for us!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 06:16 pm:

Dr. Nat I also have a collection of rocks, I have some Jacobsville sandstone by the sidewalk and someone stole it. I was furious, when the Chief of Police came home, one of my neighbors at the time. I told him about the rocks being stolen. Some days later the thief returned the rocks and appologised, seems he lived next to a police officer who had heard how mad I was about the rocks being stolen, and decided to do the right thing and return my rocks. Precious just shook her head and wondered why I would get so upset about a few rocks. The police had a long talk with the perp.

By Kelly Kidd (Ellykay) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 06:23 pm:

Happy Birthday to my wonderful husband Kevin.
Happy 46th babe!

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 08:42 pm:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RCW!!!

Rob & Grace
Jason & Carrie

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 - 11:22 pm:

Is it really RCWs birthday today? 13th? What a coincidence! Our youngest grandchild is 1 year old already today! Where does the time go?

Happy Birthday then Bob! & our little Wes too!
