The original Pasty Camist Jonathan Hopper captured some fine photos of the all-nighter at Winter Carnival 8 years ago. That is actually where the Pasty Cam had its beginnings a year earlier (1998 Winter Carnival). In less than a month we'll be starting year number 10 of this daily feature.

Last evening quite a few rugged Keweenaw residents braved the sub-zero conditions to attend Big Buck Night at Bethany Baptist in Dollar Bay. A familiar voice was speaking there - Jerry Keranen - whom you may recall if you've listened to past years' play-by-play on WMPL. Paul Roberts provided a couple of shots:

By Vicky P (Vickyp) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 08:11 am:

Good morning all.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 08:15 am:

Good Morning! It's -6 so far in the Middle of the Mitten, with a wind chill of -23. I think it may go down some more yet, before it goes up. I think it is supposed to go up to a whopping +4 for a daytime high here sometime later this afternoon. Brrr!! That kind of stuff makes it cold even inside the house!

You all stay warm today!

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 08:28 am:

Good Morning everyone, -10 here in Houghton, hope our vehicles start so we can clean up the driveway this morning.

By Ray Laakaniemi (Rlaakan) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 08:30 am:

Minus 11, feels like minus 29 out here 40 mi sw of Minneapolis, coldest of the year. Good thing they are playing The Big Game in warmer climes.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 09:06 am:

Happy Superbowl Sunday, and a very cold one I might add!!
Where is Deb and Mr. Deb? Oh boy, I bet they're down in nice warm Miami for the Superbowl.

GO BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 09:15 am:

Just a little worship between friends? Might be the only place to keep warm.

By Chuck K (Chuckclarkston) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 09:39 am:

Your right BJ it feels like back home in Dollar Bay. -10 here in Clarkston. I wonder where Dave H.is this morning. Must be nice and warm in Tenn.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 11:13 am:

It's dang near freezing here Chuck 33 Snowflakes flying like someone up there if having a pillow fight with goosedown fearher's in them.Thinking of moving closer to the Equator where most of the population lives. You don't see people flocking to the U.P. in fear of Global Warming now do ya?
Lot's of us here today from Dollar Bay,that is good to see.Kenty in Lincoln Park too who's brother Mark was Bestman at my first.Take a look at them Rack's on those Big Buck's! Holly Wah!Good to see still have some great hunting up there.Using the Environmental Wacko method of picking the winner of the Super Bowl Bear's vs Horse's is a tuff one to call.Bear's are strong, but horse's could run away with it.

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 11:31 am:

-10 is nothing it was -20 last night with -40 wind chills in Eagle River, WI going for a high of -6. Might have to break out the long pants instead of shorts today ;)

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 11:39 am:

Strange BridgeCam photo today........

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 11:58 am:

Yea, what's up with the bridge cam??? Looks like the bottom of a windowsill.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 12:05 pm:

Well, we woke up to 14 below today. Yesterday we went to the cities to see a Broadway performance of Grease. Took a nice warm bus that dropped us off at the door, picked us up at the door and dropped us off at our car. We proceeded to go to the grocery store and definitely left the car running. Then had a nice warm ride home. Am definitely not leaving the house today.

Go Indy!!!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 12:09 pm:

Rumor has it that the world famous Bridge Cam will be fully operational later today. Stay tuned.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 12:46 pm:

Good afternoon from Mishawaka, IN. I woke up to 5 below this morning. Coldest it's been here a long time. The gas bill for heat ought to be out of sight this month. Oh, well better than freezing.

Only a little over 6 1/2 hours till Super Bowl.

Go Bears!

By Gordon Schmitt (Gordy) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 01:09 pm:

Woohoo, a working bridge cam, had to tell my mom I had switched to the Mainstreet Calumet webcam to see the weather now, almost as good except no bridge. But I do get to look down 5th St towards my favorite store, Copper World.
Back now to a frigid Chicago at -0? Wonder if there is a difference between -0 and +0. Wind Chill here is -22 and it is, had to work a short time this morning outside.
Gordy

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 01:29 pm:

The bridge cam looks like a curtain, maybe the curtain will rise when the bridge cam starts to work.
GO BEARS!!!

Here's a good article from the Freep today on Michigan Tech.

We are the Bears Shufflin' Crew
Shufflin' on down, doin' it for you.
We're so bad we know we're good.
Blowin' your mind like we knew we would.
You know we're just struttin' for fun
Struttin' our stuff for everyone.
We're not here to start no trouble.
We're just here to do the Super Bowl Shuffle.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 05:14 pm:

Holy Cow! They just changed our forecast low to -13 for tonight! I don't remember it getting below -9 air temp since we moved up here in 1979. And, they replaced out Wind Chill Advisory with a Wind Chill Warning. Bummer!

Stay warm, everybody!

By Greta Armata (Gretania) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 05:16 pm:

Getting ready for the big game. Just returned home from an errand and the bank thermometer was at -8. Not much warmer 300 mi south in Milwaukee than up nort, ya hey. Probably only folks out and about were us used-to-be yoopers who cut our teeth on icicles.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 05:21 pm:

We're in a flurry of activity here getting ready for our Super Bowl
Party. We're expecting 16-18 people. Years gone by, it would have
been our son's party. Now it's ours, but really his. As we down
chili dogs, wings, ribs and assorted side dishes, we'll all be thinking
of him in Iraq. His friends continue to show for the party even
though he hasn't been able to be home for it the last three years.
His friends are a loyal group and we'll be checking our e-mail
throughout the game to see if he's been able to send a message.
At the leastl, we'll be able to send him pictures of the event. Even
this techno peasant can see the value of technology at moments
like this.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 05:36 pm:

Kosk, best wishes on your Super Bowl Party, in Honor of your son! It sounds yummy!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 06:04 pm:

It's gonna be an "Unbearable game"! Good luck to both teams!!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 06:23 pm:

Interesting story in the Detroit Free Press, thanks for the link, cherokee yooper.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 06:34 pm:

and that first play was what?--greatness

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 06:37 pm:

The last one wasn't bad if your a Bears fan either, Margaret. That was a very poorly thrown ball. Too bad the Patriots aren't in it. Tommy Boy would show them how the game is played. Sigh!

By Robinohio (Robinohio) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 06:48 pm:

Its 6 degrees in the area of Ohio where I live and they are calling off all of the schools. I think all the warm weather we were having made people forget it gets cold

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 08:06 pm:

Kosk, hope your having a good time at your party and that your son is able to send you an email or two.

4 above zero here in Mishawaka, IN at half time. By 4:00 they had called off school for tomorrow. Our district only buses special needs students, the rest walk or parents bring. I'm not looking forward to making up the day but understand why they called school off. In Indiana you must make up all days due to weather delays.

Going back to see the Bears pull it out.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 09:00 pm:

Thanks Charlotte and Marianne--

We're having a great time but so far no word from our son. We're
still hoping though. A friend of ours brought a speaker phone and
it's all set up just in case he gets to call us.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 09:47 pm:

Re: Charlie Hopper's "rumor" above:

I 'tink Charlie's the "wizard" that was pullin' all those levers behind that curtain.

Curtain is gone, and da Bridge Cam ... it's baaaack!
Now let's see if it updates.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 09:54 pm:

Charlie--that's awesome! Thank you.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 11:28 pm:

Wonder of wonders, our son called and everybody at the party had
a chance to speak to him! A successful party...and he was at it if
only figuratively.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 11:29 pm:

Beautiful BridgeCam picture, Charlie but it's stuck at 19:47. But I have faith it'll be okay soon. And a grand time for it to work, too, so we can see all that SNOW!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 11:56 pm:

Kosk--I am so happy for all of you that your son was able to call during the party. That's terrific!

It's nearly midnight here. It was -5, with a wind chill of -23 & a Wind Chill Warning at 11 pm in the Middle of the Mitten. And our crazy schools haven't had the sense to call off school for tomorrow yet. That's a bummer!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 05:48 am:

It's before sunrise here in the Keweenaw, and we're all keeping our fingers crossed that when daylight returns, so will the regular Bridge Cam updates. With such white-out conditions as currently in the Copper Country, we may not see much today.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 06:49 am:

Kosk, That is so wonderful that your son was able to make your party such a success. I'm so happy for you guys. It's so hard having a loved one over there. Thank God for technology even though sometimes it drives us crazy.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 07:33 am:

Kosk, Happy to hear your son was able to call. What a great thing technology is when it means you can hear from a loved one so far away.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, February 6, 2007 - 10:03 pm:

Deb and Charlotte,
Thanks so much for your messages. We get e-mails from him but
there's nothing like hearing his voice!
