This is a shot of a wintry Redridge Dam, complete with snow-capped ice that has formed while the water is flowing over what's left of the wooden structure. Donn de Yampert snapped this photo while on a snowy trek to the Redridge area. In case you're wondering just where in the U.P. that might be, I found this map back in our archives.

Is this after they removed part of the crib dam recently? BTW, the steel dam is one of three ever built and two that remain. The MTU archives has some pictures of it when it topped over. Great place Redridge.

I love Redridge! There are some really nice places on the lake now too. My aunt used to live there and she and her daughter would sell crafts out of their house. My hubby's always wanted to fish the Redridge Dam. Very beautiful!

I am one of many who used to go with the parents to nearby Liminga to pick strawberries at Frantti's. Five cents a quart and eat all you want while you pick.

Richard,
Yes, this is after the DEQ destroyed part of the dam, they removed the top 13 ft in 2004.

Beautiful picture !!!! Brings back memories of Steelhead trout fishing below the dam....does the old covered road (we used to call it the tunnel road) still exist on the way to Redridge? Absolutely beautiful in the fall when the leaves turned to red and gold....

Deb S,
Was your aunt Doris Hansen? If so, we used to stop by her place to buy all sorts of craft projects like homemade dish cloths, christmas ornaments and wall hangings. I used to love that place.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 - 11:03 am:

Yes, the Covered Road is still there. I was on it last August and it was just as beautiful as ever.

I just noticed from the map it looks like this river is called the Salmon Trout River. So there are 2 Salmon Trout Rivers in the same part of the state then? Or is that a typo on the map. Great Shot!

I love watching Dams and waterfalls. Always so Pretty.

By The (Zman) on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 - 12:41 pm:

Yes there are two Salmon Trout Rivers in the U.P.
One in Marquette county and the other in Houghton county.

When did they take down the Redridge dam?

By Robert - CO (Halork) on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 - 03:55 pm:

Sorry - On the main Pasty Cam page, for today's picture, the description reads, "A picturesque cascade in the Kewewenaw..."

Lorelei, Yes that was my aunt. She died a few years ago at the age of 92 (I think). Her daughter who worked with her there has cancer right now and isn't doing very well. So sad. I loved that place too and liked to visit them there. Wasn't she just the cutest little thing? She was a beauty when she was younger. Her sister is still going strong and will be 99 in August. They are my dad's sisters.
